Fieldmouse: The insurance companies of California earn 2.7 trillion bazillioin bananadrillion dollars in profit every year. Having them pick up additional liabilities will only reduce this profit by a percentage of 0.1 to the negative 50th power, and hence will have no impact on their bottom line! They will be happy to do this because it will improve their press! That's about as much thought and as much mathematical analysis as what the Democrats put into their healthcare bill.
Right. You mandate additional coverage, hence payouts are increased. You mandate coverage for individuals who would otherwise not be covered, hence payouts are increased. But the insurance companies won't need to increase their premiums. Who is so delusional to believe that? The mainstream American newsmedia, that's who. Did they challange this nostrum?
Any thoughts on the value of 0.1^(-50) might be? A very large number. Did students of math perk up their ears at this? There was a Startrek episode -- original Startrek -- where they turned off machinery on the ship, amplified the sounds that were present by "one to the fourth power," and systematically cancelled the sound due to the heartbeats of all the individuals in their circle. One heartbeat remained, leading them to a supposedly murdered crew member. Again, any guess what the value of 1 to the fourth power might have? 1 to the 20th power? Surprising how mathematically illiterate some people are -- like writers of the original Startrek. I enjoyed the show very much notwithstanding.
