RE: team 6
Yip, after all, it is a "bowhunting" contest!;)I will be trying to get both of my with my bow this spring, as always. If I get short on time on my second trip to the farm, I MIGHT break out the Benelli, but I hope it doesn't come to that.
|
RE: team 6
So what dates you hunting? Mine is 4/28 to 5/4.
|
RE: team 6
I'm planning a trip from 4-2 through 4-7 that will be during the archery only season in KS.
I'll take a second trip sometime in May, just not surewhen. |
RE: team 6
4/19 i believe through mid-may. Ill be hunting weekends only probably.
|
RE: team 6
Last night, I talked to my buddythat I'll be hunting with back in KS., and he says that the turkeys in that areaare still in thier huge winter flocks. I hope they start dispersing soon. In just 10 days I'll be heading back to hunt.

RE: team 6
Tragedy diverted this morning. Close call on my target range. I am planning on using the Magnus bullheads this spring and I finally got some in the mail this morning. SO I knew because of the large cutting blades that I'd have to use longer arrows to keep the blades infront of and away from my bow riser, which means I will be using a totally different arrow in every aspect, heavier, longer, etc. SO I also knew that this all means that I will have to make some changes on my bow. Well, I was having a heck of a time getting any group at all, at 15 yards none the less. I kept making small adjustments on my bow trying to get them to settle into a consistant group/pattern, and wasn't making much progress. Well, after about 15 shots, the wind started to pick up a little and I was having to wait between little wind gusts, and it was getting worse, but I was hoping to get'er tuned this morning. WELL, I was once agian waiting for the wind to die down, and I happen to look at my bow cable and noticed that it was nearly broken on one sideat the split yoke part. It was so close to completely breaking that my upper limb/wheel was slanted at a visible angle. About one more shot and I think I would've had an ugly situation for sure. SO, a few phone calls later, I found a "local" shop that had one of the right length, and 90 miles later, I've got'er back together, BUT of course now the wind is really blowing, so no more practice until it dies back down.
One thing I will say about these bullheads, is that they were sharp right out of the box, and tough as nails. I used guillitines the last two years, and you could get about 1 practice shot with them and you'd have to replace blades. Not with these bullheads. They're tearing my layered foam target to bits, but even after going all the way through the target and hitting my hay bales, and once actually hitting dirt before the target, zero bent blades. Oh and I'm not sure if I accidently touched the cable with a broadhead at some point, or what. Just not sure when or why the cable frayed. Just darn glad I noticed it before I shot any more. I guess the wind is good for something.[&:]It kept me from shooting a dangerous bow!! |
RE: team 6
Howler, Wow was that lucky!!!! Hopefully that luck will carry into Turkey season for ya this year.Give us a update on your grouping.I was going to try them but I think Im going to go with a 75gr Rocket expandable and go for the body shot.I did get a couple birds useing 100gr Muzzy's.One of them I had to look hard for so thats why Im going to go with the expandables.

RE: team 6
Well I finally gave up on getting them to fly consistant with just my little blazers. No matter what I did, I just couldn't get the tiny vanes to have enough control on those 3" blades. SO, I ended up going with 5" feathers and finally got to shoot this morning, been too windy for days. And with these feathers on the back of the arrows, no problems getting consistant flight now. We'll be heading out in just 4 more days to try our luck on some early season birds in KS.

RE: team 6
GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!

RE: team 6
Thanks! I'm leaving from work early to head back this afternoon. The weather for tomorrow doesn't look good, but by the weekend it looks O.K. I'll be back Monday night, no computerback on the farm.[:o]

Good Luck!

RE: team 6
Anyone hunting???Any luck????
3 more weeks for me,Cant wait!!!! |
RE: team 6
I got back last night from KS. The long and short of it goes like this, lots of turkeys seen but no breeding going on yet. If you weren't in thier travel pattern, you were SOL. I passed up a golden opportunity the first afternoon on two jakes, and that was my only shot opportunity.
Of all the guys I know back there that were hunting at the same time, we had guys in 4 different spots every morning and evening, only 3 birds were taken. I'll be going back later this spring to do it all again. The hunting is tough when they're not breeding, that's for sure. This was the earliest I've ever tried to hunt'em. Might just wait a little longer in the future. |
RE: team 6
I was out some last Saturday and will again this week. Similar situation as you Howler, saw lots of turkeys but the gobblers are roostingand staying with big flocks ofhens which are just starting to build their nests. Until then, it is pretty hard to "guess" where to set up.
Seems as they always go the opposite direction from roost as to where I set up no matter how early, how far away from the roost, or how stealthy I try to set up. But in a few more weeks, the majority of the hens should be staying on nest all day/night and the chances of calling in a tomwill go up exponentially. Unfortunately, my hunting time is limited to a half day here and a half day there due to my son's baseball schedule and that dreaded thing called work. But our season runs until May 11th, so hopefully......... |
RE: team 6
hey guys, I havent been on here in a while so I thought I would let you know I am still in. I was training for an MMA fight for a while and that kept me pretty busy. Now I am at work in maryland and busy with that. My season opens friday here. I caint wait!!!! I have been seeing Toms strutting in the feilds all over. Caint wait to get out there!!!!!!

RE: team 6
Im not going to hesitate to take a heavy Jake with my bow if i get a chance, the waythe seasonis panningout. And so far their is only 3 birds on the board.
|
RE: team 6
Well, I missed a jake last evening![:@]The only shot I got this last weekend with my bow. I did hammer a tom with my shotgun though!:D I'll be making one more trip back to KS. in a couple of weeks to try again. Don't count me out yet!:)
|
RE: team 6
Weather was crap!!!!! Called in a 1/2 doz jakes.A couple of lone hens later on and that was it.Not one gobble all day?!?! I'll be back at it Fri.Sat,Sun.
|
RE: team 6
I've not got to get out too much and so far no success. However, if all goes according to plan, I'll be hunting all day Sunday, which will probably be my last chance even though there is still another week of season.
|
RE: team 6
SORRY GUYS!!!!! I failed. I should have taken a Jake but was hopeing for the big one.
|
RE: team 6
That's the way it goes sometimes. I missed a jake which is worse than not getting a shot at all. I'll be making one more trip to the farm in about 10 days to try one more time. Hoping to find some lonely Toms by then.
|
RE: team 6
Well, I guess I am done with zero tags filled. I hunted Sunday and had some hens within bow rangeand some gobblers responding but the gobblers would never come onto my property.
They hung up about 30 yards from me and would not cross the fence. Since I do not have permission to hunt where they were,I did not pursue. Season isn't over until Sunday, but it is unlikely that I will get a chance to get out again. |
RE: team 6
I have 2 weekends left, and a few weekdays to get this done. I havnt even connected on one with my gun yet but im prolly going to switch to the bow after this weekend.
|
RE: team 6
Hello, is any body in here!;)Hey guys, I finally connected with my bow, just this morning on my last morning of the season. My friend from here in CO. and I killed a unique double on the same stand this morning, and captured it all on film.
I shot mine at 8 yards with the bullhead and when it started floppin' around, the other toms and jakes came running into the set and my friend shot a nice tom too with his shotgun. He actually missed his first shot, but connect as they were scattering. Mine had a beard 10.25", left spur of 1.125", right spur 1.25" and weighed 19#'s. The score I come up with = 60.75. It was an awesome hunt to say the least. And here's a pic. of the two toms, the two weapons and two happy hunters. Me on the left. :) |
RE: team 6
In hind sight, one thing I should've done was clucked with my mouth call to try to stretch my gobblers head/neck out for my shot. These bullheads really are head/neck only broadheads, and if anyone try's to tell you otherwise, call BULLchit on them because they simply won't penetrate the body, at all! I hit my turkey at the base of the neck while in full strut and slightly quartered to me. Broke two blades and did NOT penetrate more than 1", just enough to kill the turkey quickly.
Here's a pic. of the damage. I'm only pulling about 65#'s on my bow right now, but I don't think a 90# pull would get much penetration either, not without breaking all the blades off. See for yourself. |
RE: team 6
Congrats Howler! Its nice that we could get on the board. I failed for our team....could have shot a jake early but hindsight is 20/20.
|
RE: team 6
Thanks Siman08, I also missed a jake early on, BUT I guess it was for the better, since I finally got a chance at a good bird. When it comes to turkey hunting with the bow, I usually don't get to picky about the beard length.
|
RE: team 6
Yea i am under the belief that turkeys are harder to hunt then deer.
|
RE: team 6
Howler, is their any way we could see your video?

RE: team 6
Howler, is their any way we could see your video? Thanks gplant. It looks like a total of 16 birds out of the 80 bow hunters were killed. About 20% success rate. Not bad, BUT not real good either. |
RE: team 6
Thats pretty sweet Howler :D
