RE: Official Team 3 Thread
Well I feel better tonight, as I lost my honey hole to hunt this year I really was not sure if the season had high hopes. I was planning on trying to find another place and then it would take time to get to know the land. I managed to gain permission not far from my house to hunt a small piece of property in farm land. Now I am a big woods kinda guy and never had thechance to hunt farm land so it was going to be a adjustment year at best.
I scouted this land for the first time a week ago. The next day hung 2 stands where I thought I had the best chance. Last night sitting out the last hour of scouting at dark I see 2 coyotes. Ok not that great of a signbut around here the deer have to be use to them. Then 15 minutes before it was black they start howling. Then about seven other coyotes answer back around the same field I have been sitting in. Ok this isn't looking to great but this is the only parcel of land I have permission to hunt. Plus its bordered by 2 small plots of wildlife mangment area. Gets hit a fair amount mostly waterfowl. With not much to lose and a short time to see if it ACTUALLY HAS A DEER ON IT I sat out this evening for some scouting. When I scouted I saw very little deer sign and the good thing is that there is a small pond tucked right in the middle of this 40 acres I have to hunt. The pond is surrounded by thick woods I mean real thick tough to walk and it's steep around the pond as it goes up into wheat fields and corn fields of the neighbors property. I thought surely a buck would hold up in this thick cover with water right here and crops not far off. Anyway, this evening at dark the coyotes started howling again but they were a little more distant and from the neighbors fields. Then right out in front of me 100 yards where I put a camera and my stand a little further in along the pond I see a DEER. SWEET! I am in buisness I grab the binos cause I could only see a silouette and it's a buck a decent buck I can't say for sure it was pretty dark he is at least a eight and quite possibly larger. Full velvet so they always look bigger but he was a tad wider than his ears and decent tines. I'm guessing 115 to 125 inch. I can't say for sure he could be largerbut where this area gets hit hard and I am scrambling for a place to hunt if he gives me a chance I believe I may take him. Hopefully my cam didn't miss him as it's one of those cheap digital ones but this deer was mere feet away from my treestand I hung and right next to my camera.Sorry for the story but I was excited and feel alive again. I can't wait to see if I see him again to pattern him. Season is weeks away. Team 3 for the WIN! |
RE: Official Team 3 Thread
Hey all. Went spotting the other night and saw a good many bucks on what was a slow night for deer activity. Saw a big 12 pointer that would gross about 150". He's in some new hunting ground that I discovered, and may be a tough one to get.
Also, if crossbows are a legal firearm in your area (i.e. PA's 2nd season), are we allowed to use those for this contest? |
RE: Official Team 3 Thread
Good homework guys, I need to be doing some more of my own so over the weekend I bought a Bushnell Sentry IR Digital camera to set up this next weekend where Isaw some great up-n-comers last season that will be ripe for the picking this year!!
Tribal, I am glad to hear that you went out and found a place, my fiance got into deer hunting two years ago and the first trouble was finding a place that I could take her! Through the family grapevine, I found a small piece of timber land with mostly CRP and saw some dandy bucks and got my fiance her first buck! Sometimes finding a piece of property just takes some door to door type hunting and sometimes if you dig deep enough into the family tree....someone with a little gold might just remember your last name!! Don't know about you, but my allergies that have taken hold of my health and are a welcome sign that bow season is upon me!!! I LOVE BEING MISERABLE!!!! HaHa, every year allergy season cues up before deer season.....love it! (Catch my sarcasm??) Anyone got anymore success stories...scouting successes....or recent/old pics?? |
RE: Official Team 3 Thread
hey guys just checking in. had a busy weekend. first year in. i hunt in central indiana and also in Michigan.
just got permission to hunt a couple of farms around the area and no one hunts around here so i am looking to score on some backstraps. the farmeris trying to get me permission tohunt on his leased land and if i get this i will have about 6 farms that i have permission to hunt. in michigan i hunt deer rich country and do not normally have a problem in getting one. i am a full time student with 3 kids and work part time. i will be hunting as much as possible but i am afraid i will be the weak link..... but looking forward to having some fun.. looks like i lucked out on the team. some serious bucks posted already. i am thrilled to be on this.... the winning team.. team name do not care. "the whitetail tribe" is cool and so is the bone freaks. |
