First day of season. Had a spike come in to 12 yds. Then the temps got into the 80's and I'm done for the day. It's supposed to get better this weekend. So, I'll be out Friday and Saturday.

Good luck!

Can't believe there hasn't been an entry in a week and a half out of all these hunters - I know a lot of seasons aren't open yet, but still......

You're bumming me out Dave. Somebody's got to take up the slack from my lame rockchucking episode! My buddy's back with his plane. I've been harassing him to get the floats on it but my time might be better spent researching potential spots with beaches we can land on.

Well I watched one of the big boys again tonight in the bean field, he comes out about 7:50pm. He has gone from velvet to hard horn since I saw him last. That sure makes'em shrink [:'(]lol. He'll still go mid 130's and he'll still get an arrow given the chance!:D

I was hoping hte spike would grow 100" or so in the 15 minutes he fed in front of me but no luck. This Saturday is supposed to be better weather wise and I'm getting into the funnel.

130" is a nice buck.

Thats cool just to have the opportunity to harvest the deer even if you chose to pass Dave! Spikes are fun to watch!

WhenI first saw the body of a deer at day break I got the shakes. I always get excited when I see deer. The little guy fed right toward me. Was definitely cool watching him.

Well I got to sling my first arrow of the year yesterday. I took my wife out for an evening hunt to try and get her first deer with a bow.

About 5pm a tiny little deer came in (no spots) and I told her to take the shot if she wanted. She drew her bow when the deer went behind a tree and when it came out she let it rip at about 15 yards. Well she hit high and a bit back. The deer ran off about 20 yards and stopped to see what happened. I wasn't sure how leathal her shot was so I took a quick shot as it got ready to head into some thick brush. My shot was on the money and he ran about 30 yards and piled up.

It was a fun hunt and i'm glad she got a shot at one. Hopefully next time she will calm down a bit and get a little better shot placement.

Congrats to both you and your wife Lefty! I'm sure you know this but getting her shooting lots of 3d's and just being around deer as much as possible will help. Most of all, keep it positive!;)

RE: Official Team Tree Sharks (2) Thread

She statrted last year and had some close calls but didn't get a chance to loose an arrow. She gets out and shoots with me a lot but it's hard to simulate the moment of truth when your heart is beating out of your chest.

She did a lot of things right the other nightshe got drawn and the deer never knew she was there. Last year she got picked off afew timesmoving when she shouldn't have. We had a good dicussion about the hunt and what went well and how to relax and make the shot. She is making good progress and I am really glad to have the new hunting partner. We have a lot of fun andit's a good activity we can share. She got bit by the archery bug, she can't wait to get back out in the stand later this week.

It took me a while to flip the switch from "very excited person" to "Cool hand Luke" when a deer is standing in front of you. Still hard at times.

Congrats to both you and your wife Lefty!
Same here buddy. Nice job to both of you.

On a sadder note gentleman I have a bit of bad news to relate. I was unfortunate enough to break a bone in my right foot this past weekend. I head in for surgery tomorrow. It was either that or 2-6 months in a cast.

I still plan on hobbling out Saturday morning for our early doe season opener but my "heading out" will only be about 60 yards from the vehicle. I always pride myself on finding the hardest to reach spots to put my stands/blinds in. It looks like I won't be hunting any of them until early the November if I am lucky. Sorry to let you guys down a bit but wish me luck when I do get out.

RE: Official Team Tree Sharks (2) Thread

Wow Frank, sorry to hear that. I know from 2 back surgeries that it's always better to take care of a problem ASAP instead of waiting. November is rut time so if you are back by then all is good. Take care of yourself and good luck with the surgery.

how did you break the bone?

RE: Official Team Tree Sharks (2) Thread

Hiking on the Applachian trail two weekends ago I must have caused a stress fracture in my foot. It didn't feel that painful so I didn't pay it much attention. This past weekend the dog got out of the back fence and I was forced to chase it down. I was barefoot at the time as I was trying to give him a bath. Running barefoot on a sidewalk with a stress fracture isn't a good idea.

;)

....and down I went.

Still, I will remain hopeful.

Man, seems like it's always something simple that gets you. You survive days on deck running 50# blocks of frozen bait through a chopper and cut your finger in the galley making a sandwich. At least you didn't fall out of a tree! Take it easy now and be ready for November. And stay vigilant in the backyard... you never know when lady luck may pay you a visit.

I'm shooting for next weekend but I'm chomping at the bit to go now. It's a major ordeal to get to a spot that's open for me to hunt now that I've taken one. Otherwise I'd be out right now and overnighting for the weekend.

Just point my toes up and roll the sod over me... I could start dating again too. [:@]

Silvers arethick in the river, fun to catch but about as good as cardboard to eat, alot like those MI kings. ;)

My friend has a busted elevator in his plane so he's got a new one on order that has to be custom made, should be here next week. He's hunting the road system tomorrow since he hasn't shot anything yet. We may work on the floats Sunday. If nothing else we can still do some beach landings later in the season as the snow pushes them out of the mountains and the rut kicks in.

The mercury gives me character! We eat the things all of the time, nothing is healthy anymore, but I bet the chemicals in the kings is greatly reduced to what it was 15 years ago pre zebra mussel invasion....took a pretty ripe on today for the smoker as a matter of fact!

Thanks for the well wishes guys. I decided not to head out Saturday for the doe opener as my foot was throbbin' after the surgery. I am going to try to give it a go tomorrow afternoon with my oldest son. If I get something I will be sure to post it.

Just checking in, heading to Chicago tomorrow for work for the rest of the week - might be a while before I can get out (can't believe how fast the summer went, I'm actually going to a HOCKEY game tomorrow - geez).

Got to head out and put in a good days hunt on Saturday. Saw a ton of deer through out the day. Only saw 1 shooter buck about 100 yards out in a been field field in the AM. Passed up some shots on some dinks and yearling does.

Finally in the evening a momma doegave me a shot opportunity I couldn't pass up, 8 yards broadside feeding right below my tree. Decided to put some more meat in the freezer, made a good shot and she piled up about 80 yards from my tree. I now have 2 archery bucks tags in my pocket so it's basically buck hunting for me from here on out.

Here is a pic of the doe I got Saturday evening.
