Are the acorns falling a little early this year?
Not sure if it's early, I cannot remember from last year but they are full and they are falling. 90% of the trees around my house are oak and it sounds like it's raining in the woods.

Just got off the phone with the neighbor with great news. He's seen the big 8 four times in the past couple weeks. Headed to my property every time. Ill be slipping in this weekend to put stand in the main funnel and one leading to what i believe is his bedding area. Its a tough spot to hunt due to wind and entry/exit but its all i got. This buck is at least 6 years old and the area he hangs out (300 acres) receives no pressure from hunters. I dont want him to reach 7 years ;)

Me too, Cougar. Havent seen many lately but hopefully theres a few around. I always look forward to the dove opener every year.Signifies the beginnning of fall hunting seasons for me. Im anxious to get my lab some work too.

I used to dove hunt every chance I got but it was my primary bow spot that I did this. Today, I don't like to disturb that area at all and I haven't picked up another spot to hunt doves as of yet.

MMMMmm dove breasts wrapped in bacon and bbq sauce. MMMMmmm

RE: Official Team 15 Thread

I have doves everywhere on our property, but I won't hunt them for the same reasons Rob mentioned. I prioritize my area to strictly deer and turkey hunting, and since it's a smaller parcel (90 acres), I want to keep disturbances to a minimum.

rybohunter 08-27-2008 09:56 AM

RE: Official Team 15 Thread

No dove hunter here. I'm not real handy with a shotgun.Although this winter my neighbor cut down the pine trees in his yard that would probably roost 50+ doves each night, maybe more.

Seems early to me, I know last year I was in a treestand before they started dropping. When they did, I felt stupid for not bringing my hardhat.:D

Well guys.....

Checked out the local farm and pretty excited. My stand is in place, but will need another one if the wind switches. The farmer changed the fields on me this year but did me a favor and planted his clover field in the middle of a corn field so its surrounded by corn and the wood line--where my new stand local will be!!

Be headin up north to check the cameras and stands. Should be great!

Dove opens on the 1st.....so i will give that a shot on a neighbors 40 where i got some permission!

Good luck all

RE: Official Team 15 Thread

I mainly dove hunt at my duck club or conservation land so it doesnt disturb the deer i hunt. Not that there's really any dove at my deer spots.

Spines- the clover plot sound like a great place to hunt. I can almost picture it.

rybo, i didnt notice any NEW acorns except those green nuts i found....

last year i remember them falling hard the first week of the season...actually somewhat annoying..hunted another oak ridge on the same SGLs and it was rediculous...shoulda went back there when it cooled down...the day i hunted it was extremely hot...fresh rubs there last year i just tagged my buck and hunted the oak ridge i scouted yesterday just to see what i could see later in the season...

i may dove hunt but i doubt it...if i go out it will be to get rid of miscellaneous shotgun shells i have laying around lol....opens monday here as well....i dont have access to my favorite shotgun anymore either...it was my grandfathers that past away shortly after mom was born...i took care of all his guns since i was a youngun...grandma used to let me take what i wanted to use...kept the win m88 in 308 and win m50 semi 12ga since i was 14 or so....we lived together for about 2 years and when my family got a new house and left the house we and grandma lived in, dad made me leave the guns...she never officially GAVE them to me..though im the only one with any intrest in guns and hunting in the family...me and that winchest model 50 knocked down a TON of game...doves, grouse, pheasant, rabit, atleast 1 fall turkey....it was the gun that when i pulled the trigger on, something usually died...dont know what it was about it...id limit on doves and grouse 3x faster with it than any other shotgun ive used...buddies used to get mad when we were grouse hunting!

Dude...I said it before.....

If you're hunting a place that has enough 130" minimum deer running around to satisfy a year's worth of hunters......

More power to ya. I can't imagine that kind of atmosphere to hunt in. Kudos.

my bow...

06 Reflex Highlander
CX Terminator XP Selects with 125gr 3blade muzzys or 125gr 2 blade Snypers..maybe tracer nocks
Alpine soft loc 3 arrow quiver
Viper Predator MT sight with tru peep
QAD ultra rest HD
bucknasty 452x string
some other misc stuff..little slower than the NEW bows...but my arrows somewhere near 450gr..quiet and deadly...i honestly dont know if i can justify the extra money for a "top shelf" bow..EVER..then again, from what i hear, the Highlander is maybe one of the very best mid shelf bows ever made...cant understand WHY reflex only made them for about half a year....it was MAJORLY successful from what ive read..

got some kinda upsetting news today....

Rob, remember my FIRST year, the year of Bros before does?? remember my FIRST ever morning of archery hunting and getting thrown outta my treestand??

i have a feeling the SAME is going to happen again!!!! different guy, but i got word of a guy that got stands and cameras ALL over the "block" trying to figure out the biggun....one of his ladder stands is in MY spot. im gunna try to straighten things out this weekend...i got permission from the land owner AND the farmer. i can almost guarentee he doesnt know where to FIND the landowner...and hes crossing my buddies fields which are owned by ANOTHER land owner(of which i have hunting permission from BOTH!) i can guarentee you one thing, i am NOT leaving my stand this year. if i beat him there, which i will, hes SOL coz im not leaving...if he shows up he should thank me for not stealing his gear(im not that low) but im not leaving.

wish the landowners were on MY side....they are both laid back and wont care or do anything....both older timers...both have no problems with hunters...1 owns the fields and half the woods..the other owns other fields and the other piece of woods...not much woods at all so they dont get hunter issues...

im already in "panic" mode...it honestly puts a very sour taste in my mouth about hunting when stuff like this happens. i got 1 other decint spot at home and i have a feeling it will get hunted hard because of the crop rotation this year...same situation...anyone can hunt it and not have any trouble...

oh well....no sense in worrying about it...nothin i can do except be in my tree a couple hours before the other guy thinks about waking up....who knows...maybe he hunts his other stands and i whack the monster opening morning....past expiriences tell me opening morning on that hill is the PLACE to be for the biggun to come through undisturbed....im willing to bet its the 8pt i muffed up on opening morning LAST season and didnt get the shot...

RE: Official Team 15 Thread

Not sure if I posted the rundown of my season here or not:
September 19-27 Idaho (Elk/whitetails)
OH bow season will be in upon my return as will PA early doe special regulations.
Weekends in October will likely be split PA on Saturdays, OH on Sundays.
From Halloween thru November 16th I will bounce between OH & PA as needed & time permits (12 full days to hunt). It matters not which state I shoot a buck in as I will hunt whichever area I feel is the hot one at the time.
If after Nov 16th I am still buckless, that is likely how I will finish the year. I’ll have one more weekend in OH before each of our states gun seasons hit. I may use my bow during gun season, but that is one of the few opportunities I get to use my pistol to hunt with. I have less than zero faith in the late archery season after hunting during it last year and seeing the absolute circus that it was. Locals out in full force driving every property in sight. Permission be damned.

Got the schedule cleared to do some scouting tomorrow in Ohio. I figure to glass the trees in the oak stands & see how the mast crop is looking. Finalize a few routes to selected stand trees. And then sit over some fields and glass till dark.

Guys, here's the video out my bathroom window this morning. He walked within 15 yards of my treestand I hunt there this year. I'm not sure why he's coming to my sand mound although I did plant it 2 years ago, perhaps something is actually growing there now.

Mauser- Hope there's no conflict, but keep us posted.

Rob- Nice buck! Does he walk by your 3-D range to get to your sand mound? Just curious how he reacts to your deer targets.

Ryan- Sounds like you definitely haveyour seasonplanned out, just need to get it done by the 16th ;) Im sure it will work out

RE: Official Team 15 Thread

thanx guys...i'll let ya'll know...dont worry;) my eyes, its like public land...first come first serve...if my alarm goes off and i get up with it, i'll be the first one there unless he sleeps there...last year i was on stand at like 4am...do the same this year...actually works great because everytime im there THAT early, i hear deer walking around in the dark....

just too many hunters and not enough land in my neck of the woods...and BIG bucks draw crowds and word spreads like wildfire....i havent seen him...maybe this weekend while im coonhunting at home i'll see him...

im not worried about the other guy....hes gunna ask "didnt you see the tree stand" and im gunna say NOPE! wasnt there in MARCH when i trimmed my trails and shooting lanes and built the brushpiles cleaning up the area!! spot aughta look GREAT...i found deer like brushpiles opposed to limbs and junk laying all over the woods so i piled all the big branches and stuff in a couple brush piles...seems to calm them and gives me more opprotunites to draw...

lets just hope he hunts elsewhere opening morning and the biggun gives me a shot and i let the air outta him!

Rob, thats a nice one!! wide and decint mass...will he break your magic 100" mark that you been trying to break?? (pretty sure you said before you havent taken a buck over 100" ) i stink at scoring...i know he got beam legnth, decint mass and spread workin for him! hes about as "rob buck" as one can get with both sides...im confident you'll be posting pics with you behind him!

Nice buck Rob, hope you get him. Mauser, a couple parcels of my hunting lands are almost like public as well now, wasn't so a few years ago:(.

My hunting bow and setup:

'05 Bowtech Patriot(love it so I can't retire it)
Muzzy dropaway rest
Predator sight
Easton A/C Superslim 400's
Broadheads: Rocky Mtn. Turbo, Muzzy MX-3, G5 Montec. Haven't determined which head will be my "buckbuster" yet;). I've had excellent success with the RM Turbos the three seasons I've used them so its hard to change.

Haven't seen many here yet, the great Northern doves won't come down south for a while. I'll be hunting some nearby public land for doves, I don't think it will be crowded. When they start harvesting the crops we used to go up river and hunt on a large sandbar in mid-river that divides Illinois and Indiana, but I doubt we do that this year.

RE: Official Team 15 Thread

i hear ya coug....its no fun...but, i guess thats the name of the game in PA. gotta scout and hunt SMARTER than the average hunter....

looking at ariel photos of that farm that gave me permission to groundhog hunt yesterday has my mouth WATERING!!! looks like a good bit of fields behind the barn upto the treeline...about 10acres or so of woods...then another field, which is L O N G but only 1 crop wide so its not very wide at all runs perpindicular to the road..its as long as ALL the other fields to get to the treeline...but not wide...to the west of that is a BIG chunk of woods...but theres a treeline between the 10acres and BIG chunk made by that long, thin field...talk about a VERY potential funnel!! looking at the layout id say the farmer owns both pieces of fields and probably atleast the small section of woods, if not the large chunk as well. even if he doesnt own the small chunk, that treeline strip that ajoins the 2 looks GOOD from the ariel...

SURELY going to be back there!!! got me excited!

was going to do more door knocking today but its kinda crappy out...not raining at the time, but not nice out....if i could get onto 1 or 2 or 3 farms here at school id be SET for school hunting spots...between them and the SGLs...im not greedy...i only need a couple spots and can rotate them and keep them fresh...

Mauser, how many more years do you have left out there? I'm wishing now that I would have went there (although they didn't ultimately have my degree, so it wouldn't have worked out anyways). I would have loved having access to all that public land during the week when I was in school.

RE: Official Team 15 Thread

this is my last year at SRU matt.

lotttttttts of public land opps here...moraine, mconnells mills, countless SGLs within 30mins of here....

i like my gamelands up north, though its a bit of a drive...i like the hills...the big woods...i cant stand the land down around school....flat, swamp, just boring...did alot of walking on sgl 95 in butler co and moraine...toooo many hunters. figure most of the areas around here are like that...my gamelands up north is empty..10k acres to myself practically lol...

i got into a good school "in the city" for engineering...past it up coz i couldnt hunt or fish lol...came here in the pre-engineering deal 2 or 3 yr here and 2 or 3 at PSU...but only lasted a semester...

if im not hunting, im fishing or scouting or...maybe in class or doing work...

i RARELY miss a class...maybe a class or 2 a semester tops...and usually because im deathly sick...i do good and hunt and fish in my "down time" i just gotta make sure i focus and get my work and studying done this year...
