Well, he wasn't my first "archery" kill. I did kill a doe with a crossbow before. I guess I should say he was my first compound bow kill.
About the shot........Man all I can say is that I was lucky. When I shot, I saw a smalllimb (in the line of fire, about 15' high) start shaking, I heard the arrow "slap" the deer ashe whirled around and ran off in the direction he came from. I was really un-sure where I hit him. It all happened so fast, but I still remember it like it was in slow motion. I thoughtI heard him run into the thicket (about 20-25 yards)and started thrashing/crashing. I took out my bino's and was checking tosee my arrow. When I saw it, It looked clean. I felt like I needed to vomit. So after I climbed down to look for my arrow. Before I found it,I came up on some blood. The blood trail was awesome! Looked like buckets of blood was splashed on everything. It was extremely thick woods. I followed the trail for 20 yards or so and it just ended at one big puddle of blood, but no deer. I was so affraid of losing him. I knealed down and looked all around, andI saw rack5 yards away behind a fallen tree!I was exstatic!
Not sure how it hit his neck. Either the arrow deflected on the twig, or he just moved very quickly (or a combo of both).
When I went back to get the arrow, it was totally clean except for the dirt in my broadhead. That was weird.
I'll take luck over skill any day.
