Sounds like my kinda place!!

RE: 31-Official team 31 Thread
well...did a little scouting yesterday...just in my good spot here at home.
the spot is tough to figure out. i moved a little farther in from where i hunted last year. all my deer came from that direction last year. i hung a lock on over the trail the buck i hit ran back into the nasty field. guessing that he ran out the same trail he entered on...i can see that and can see the ridge top...should be a good spot. even if they come out of range i should hear them or get a glimps of them to get them from the climber the next time. feel really good about the placement though. i will be there opening day. hopefully ALL day. trying not to leave the first day just because its going to be my best shot till the rut...will only hunt it maybe once or twice more before the rut. i cant wait. 13 days and im in a stand!!! only doe hunting...but man am i pumped. oh ya...started school last week. should been an easy semester with a bunch of liberal arts classes...but it dont look like it. speeches for public speaking...2hrs of homework 3 nights a week for logic...studying for meteorology and geography..and random projects for most of them as well...shouldnt be TERRIBLE...but still isnt a cake walk...i never seem to get a break...i dont know how kids spend all their time partyin and drinkin at school....i guess if i didnt hunt and fish i could party...but i much rather be in a treestand.... so theres an updated story of mausers life;) |
RE: 31-Official team 31 Thread
Sounds like your placement is good. I hope that it works out for you, and good luck with school.
I will be doing some shooting today with my son again, and getting him more accustomed to the Summit Viper he will be hunting out of. No more scouting--at least not at this particular property. I may go to some land that has been cleared to see what kind ofeffect that it has had on it, checking primarily the edges, and where I took my last bear and saw a good boar after that.I have noticed a few acorns around here. I am surprised due to the late cold snap we had after the early warm up which damaged a lot of trees around here. I don't know exactlywhy, butmy attitude and approachare both very different this year. I think, primarily because the last season was so messed up by poachers, and I havea 'nothing will get in my way ' mindset this year---so don't cross me!;):DI am taking greater measures to ensure that what I can control will be guarded against, but I still expect some interferences that I can't control--that's life. |
RE: 31-Official team 31 Thread

RE: 31-Official team 31 Thread
We were drifting down to the bottom of page 2 so I thought I would give us a bump.:D:D
I am down to 7 full days untill the season. I am running out of equipment to tinker with, everything is ready to hit the woods. I think I'm going to loose my mind if the 15th doesn't hurry up and get here. |
RE: 31-Official team 31 Thread
Yeah,we definitely need some more participation from some other guys on this team. Maybe if we pm and tell them that there is a pic of a good looking woman on here they will get motivated!!!! Than I will post a pic of myself in my camo underwear!!!!;):DThat oughta work!!!!!:)
One more day and I will be laying the smack down on one!!!!I am actually seeing some acorns after all of the drought and the cold snap we had!! I guessI will have to concentrate on the trees that are dropping, because it won't be that many. |
RE: 31-Official team 31 Thread
good luck manuman...lookin forward to hearin about the biggun you kill!!
i been busy with school work already...but if i stay ontop of things i should be alright. just cant let my head get under the water and i should have good huntin time. found 8 different spots to check out here on 2 tracts of public land. wanted to scout them this week, but had school work to take care of. definently get to them next week. already spent hours going over topos...should turn out to have a bunch of good spots to hunt...just gotta get in there and do the leg work.. also hung another lock on at home. not sure if i told you guys. same area i got a shot at a buck last year, and seen 2 others, one of which was a monster in rifle season. just a little farther down the ridge in a saddle where the deer enter the woods from the nasty field they bed in. should work out nicely. i will be there opening day..planning on hunting ALL day the 29th...going to be a longggg day...but thats gunna be the day to put one on the ground there. tiny strip of woods and the deer get smart quick. im just tryin to figure out how to get enough food and water in there to make it all day:D im pumped. next weekend starts my early doe season...with any luck, the does will be hungry for some apples...since i will be hunting in my apple orchard and all:D i cant wait... |
RE: 31-Official team 31 Thread
Manuman good luck on Saturday you lucky SOB. I'll be looking for the post on Saturday night with the pic of your monster or your hunting report.
I have another week from Sat, can hardly wait. |
RE: 31-Official team 31 Thread
Well guys, season is in here in Kentucky, but unfortunaly I have not had a chance to go yet (and it KILLING me, .......stupid job). I did however get a chance to go and scout some on a new piece of land I am planning to hunt for the first time this season. I found a lot of sign. As I was following one of the many trails, I caught a whiff of something, .... something dead. So I searched out the smell, and wouldn't you know it, it was a very nice 9pt, would have went P&Y. It seemed to have been dead about 48hrs. It had no exit or entrance hole and It looked very healthy (except for the fact it laid there in front of me dead). Hopefully he was the small buck of the area. On a good note, I got my ground ready today for my winter food plot planting, which I hope to get planted in the next few days. Then with a little luck and a lot of rain, I should be set.

RE: 31-Official team 31 Thread
tbyrd too bad about that buck. I think there was a thread about blue tongue or something like that killing a bunch of deer in Southern Ohio and Kentucky? I'm to lazy to search for it.

RE: 31-Official team 31 Thread
That f-ing sucks. Why do people have to do that?
|
RE: 31-Official team 31 Thread
sorry to hear about that manuman...i dont understand why people do things like that. whats the point?? to me antlers and a kill aint all that important.
i guess guys like us will never get it...because we aint guys like that. sucks... |
RE: 31-Official team 31 Thread
Sorry Manuman, don't know if your a Falcons fan but they got their ass kicked by my Vikes today!
|
RE: 31-Official team 31 Thread
I really don't care about the Falcons, but I hated how the Bulldogsbeat themselves against SC yesterday!! How frustrating can you get.
Anyway--I had a much better hunt this evening. My son went with me and although we didn't see any deer, a 250 lbs black bear came in and I released a perfect arrow, only to watch it smack a sapling literally 6" from his shoulder broadside!! I have taken a couple and told myself that I wouldn't shoot another until it was really big, but since he was with me, I thought it would be a great experience. Although I missed he had a ring side view--the bear was 5 yards to his left and he was only 10' off the ground. Pretty exciting for us both, and not so dissappointing since he had such a close encounter. I was totally surprised since I had not seen any bear sign in this area including last year. |
RE: 31-Official team 31 Thread
Manuman tough luck on that bear. I'm sure it was cool for your son to watch in aticipation and then have the arrow hit the tree. Total change in emotions, from watching the kill to oh damn he hit that tree!
ManSaturday morning can't come early enough! I don't think I'll get much sleep this week. |
RE: 31-Official team 31 Thread
just got back from doing some scouting here at school
had 8 saddles marked out. 4 on state game lands and 4 in a state park. wrote driving directions AND foot directions with compass directions and thought i was pretty dang precise. not even close. out of 8 saddles i couldnt even locate ONE! i could have, but wanted to avoid walking around these woods 3 weeks before the season pretty aimlessly. stuck to the trails and stuff they are used to people walking. i did all my topo studies on my laptop. i guess i better print them out or take my laptop next week. good news though, all the areas held alot of deer sign. good acorns and other nuts dropping..good looking woods..and far enough from the hard road i shouldnt have a whole lot of competition. one road was more of a 4x4 trail. i cant believe they didnt gate it 2 miles before they did. you definently aint gettin a car back there even now when its dry let alone wet or snowy. seen 1 doe and found a really nice fresh rub. ive never seen a rub as high as this one or rubbed so hard or with so many tine gouges...that area is tough looking though. found it in a strip of woods that was a growing cut...no way to get a stand in that area...on the back of the strip of woods is a nasty thick powerline...supposed to be a saddle there somewhere but i couldnt find it lol. keying in on saddles because they should funnel the deer nicely...gotta find them first i suppose:D now that im familiar with the areas i should beable to find most of them if i take my topos with me. nice to be out and about in the deer woods again. saturday starts my doe season. im pumped...all i gotta do is screw broadheads on my arrows and replace the blades i been practicin with and wash the hunting clothes and i will be ready to roll. |
RE: 31-Official team 31 Thread
I like your approach.I hunt the same way. I look for terrain features, especially funnels as you have described. Then I look for sign, but sometimes these funnels don't hold obvious sign, and they are not so obvious as to just where teh deer specifically will travel--especially bucks. I find that I have to keep studying closer and closer to pay attention to some of th emore subtle clues--faint trails as opposed to teh more pronounced ones, trails just within the edges of thick stuff, and eventually these will lead me to whereI need to be to intercept a buck, and sometimes that is not until later. I find also that some places are only good at certain times of the year, and , usually, the same time each year, and you won't find a deer there at all at other times. Natural foo dsources mean thatsome years an rea wil be good for a while, and then one year not be good for anything. Oh well--enough of my ramblings. Good luck saturday!

RE: 31-Official team 31 Thread
Team 31 Role Call: Whats everyone else doing to get prepared for their seasons or if your season started hows it going? Where is everyone?
My brother and I planted fall/winter food plot about 2 acres last monday before we gota bunch of rain last week and this weekend. Season opens Saturday and I haven't decided where I'm hunting yet.Wind is supposed to be out of the southon Sat 8-10 mph and high at 60. |
RE: 31-Official team 31 Thread
I'm back from my week of bear hunting. I was in the woods for 9 days. It is hard to come back to buildings and traffic. I didn't get anything, but it is nice to be off of work and don't have any schedule except you better be in the woods a couple hours before dark.
I saw one on opening day but he was only 150-175. probably around 200 live weight and I was looking for something a little bigger. you can't shoot the big one if you keep shooting the little ones...atleast that is what I tell myself :D We had 6 guys at camp and 5 of us saw bears. some more than others. It was a weird year. People every where and I was sitting in my stand and it was over 90 degrees. I think the people bothered the bears the most. They weren't that hungry and it picked up at the end of the week after most people left. I put my trail cameras out on Sunday on a part of the land I deer hunt on that I haven't ever had a camera on yet. Hopefully they show me some good stuff. Bow season start here on Saturday, but I may try to sneak up north again and go after the bears again....that season goes into October. I'll see what the girlfriend has to say about that. |
RE: 31-Official team 31 Thread
Manuman, too bad about the shot on the bear. I didn't realize there where that many down there. Do you need a tag for them or are they like coyotes around here?....open all year and no tags needed.
|
RE: 31-Official team 31 Thread
The DNR estimates that we have 2000 bears in the state of Georgia. You get a limit of 1 bear with your big game license, and the season goes all through archery,( 4 to 5 weeks)1 week of ML, and then the first month of gun season. I have taken 2 so far, but I see them pretty often--especially if the estimated population is correct. They have to be reported to the game warden, and he tags them, and goes immediately to the spot where it was taken to investigate the scene. No baiting of any kind, and no dogs.I am quite anexception where I live ---2 bears in 3 yearsand both legal!;) The game warden told me last time that 80% of all bears taken in my county are illegal! That is why they are so strict.
|
RE: 31-Official team 31 Thread
I haveuntil sep.29:(
I have all of my spots ready to roll so Ijusthave to wait . I'm going out later with my friend to scout a spot for his sister, maybe to get a muzzle loader buck. When I get backI will give y'all an update:D:D |
RE: 31-Official team 31 Thread
Hey guys just a heads up "Kidd642" (frank) is experiencing technical difficulties with HNI since the last issue we had with the boards and can't login in properly.
We're trying to get it worked out but he wanted me to drop a line to you all that he's still out there reading..........he just can't post. (For now;)) |
RE: 31-Official team 31 Thread
Matt, tell him to download Mozzilla Firefox from majorgeeks.com under browsers.
|
RE: 31-Official team 31 Thread
thanx for the heads up Matt. id say they still got a few bugs to work out:D i still think its extra sluggish. they need to beef things up before i get my first bow kill. i might single handedly crash HNI with all my pics:D

RE: 31-Official team 31 Thread
Going to do a little scouting this afternoon. I am concerned about the influence of the poachers. I sat a stand that I always see deer from ,twice, and not even a doe. It's a little frustrating right now.
|
RE: 31-Official team 31 Thread
Manuman, I hear you there, did you call the authorities about the poaching?
|
RE: 31-Official team 31 Thread
Yes, 2 different game wardens--1 a corporal and another a sargent. I went back the next day, and the deer was completely gone. I don't know if it was animals, the land owner--whom I also called---or if the wardens got it for evidence. There was a beer can, and a crumpled pack of cigarrettes right next to teh deer, whichI would assume held fingerprints if they were going torealy investigate it that much. No one has called me back, so I don't know what, if anything is being done.
