I was climbing up a tree in a new location this afternoon (area has 110 acres of corn on west, and 100 some acres of cattails to the east, and about a 100 yard wide buffer strip between it *where my stand is*) and out steps a 5x5 on a very heavily worn trail 22 yards from me. He stood on the edge of the cattails for a few minutes then made his way into the corn field. I backed out of the area, and will go back tomorrow and finish hanging my stand (might put a ladder stand in its spot now so I can video easier). The buck was mid to upper 140s, and was around 20" inside spread. After I backed out I set up on a hill top and watched the area, 2 other bucks came out and around 15 does/fawns. There is just one line of trees bordering on the cattails and I will be putting 2 or more stands in the area for different wind directions.

Just found out tonite that a local store has 15ft ladder stands for $58 on sale right now. Might hafta make the 60 mile trip to town and get a few of 'em bought up before they are gone. Also need to pick up some more metal an make a few more hang on stands.

Well not much action this past weekend on the Wisconsin Opener. Had a doe and fawn come in Saturday night. Doe was 6 yards from my tree and only had to take 2 more steps to clear the pine she was under. Well the fawn screwed that up when he got behind me and saw me as I reached for my bow....blew out of there and took mom with. Only saw one small buck and that was it. The acorn crop is poor this year which is a big reason the deer weren't moving through the oak ridge I hunt. The last few years the acorn crop was great....the groundis usuallycovered like a carpet with them...not this year. Worst opener I can remember... Last few years I was covered up with bucks on opening weekend. Hopefully that will change when the farmers knock their corn down and push the deer back into the woods. There is currently oceans of corn on the surrounding farms which usually hold deer this time of year. Well now I will concentrate on pegging down a good buck in the swamps around my house. Thank god for the ThermaCell....these things work great at repelling the skeeters otherwise there is no way I would go into the swamps until after a freeze.
Good luck!

I went out duck an goose huntin this morning. We banged our limit in a heavy rain. Right now there is a a North wind at 25mph and its still raining, so I don't think I'm going to be sittin in my stand on opening day
If it was a southerly wind I would be there for sure
