RE: 23- Team Official Thread

I have decided I am going to have to drop some money before this fall. I will definately be checking out the Montecs, thanks for the suggestions Mr. Fartman.:D I have heard them (not your farts but the Montecs), they are a bit loud in flight, but if they fly better than the Muzzy's I will be happy. As forthe farts in flight, Idon't know.

After shooting tonight I found out if I cheat and use the next pin on my sight (25 yd pin for 20 yd shots and so on) the Muzzy's fly decent. But only as a last resort will I resight my bow strictly for broadheads. I would much rather fix it the right way. Along with getting a consistent paper tune. At 5 yrds it is a mess, anything beyond that it is dead on for paper tuning. So I don't know really what to do. I promise I have been shooting a pretty good amount since last November!!

I was also doing a little scouting tonight. In a soybean field near our farm I saw atleast 3 does and a good size fork horn. This is only one ofthe farms I will be able tohunt on, butI am hoping that some bigger bucks are holding in the woods to feed until closer to dark. I have only had the opportunity to check the field around 5:30 - 6:00 pm.I need to buy abetter pair of binoculars before season so hopefully I canget a better eye on them.

As for team name and team captainI amgoing to have to nominate anyone besides me (since itis my first year with the bow and due to time constraints) and I guessthe"marsh monkey" sinceit is likepulling teeth with him. ;)

We have a good amount of time for the rest of the guys to sign in, but so far I feel we are lookinggood. The key to this contest is definately just putting up bucks. Not always the biggest ones. Keep in mind a 100 class deer looks better than goose eggs. Hopefully we all can just get acrack at something.Easier said than done sometimes.

Well, gotta run. I will be checking in hopefully later tonight.

Dave

OK, so Waid doesn't want the job and he gave some good reasons.
I am only able to check in at night and it is also my first year in the contest.

Who is going to step up and lead the charge?

youngfart 08-25-2006 08:37 PM

RE: 23- Team Official Thread

Guys
If and when we do vote a team captain and if we can't get anyone to do it,I can step up to the plate if needed, but only if that happens. I'm in here everyday and in the Huntchat also everyday.I just really don't want the responsibitlity. But like I said ,if in need I will do it ,until then I vote for Mowtownhonkey. So thats 2 for Mowtown.

If we pick "Silent but Deadly" as a team name then you, Youngfart would be the logical choice as our leader:D

what buellhunter said makes a lot of sense with the team name about youngfart.i do like "TEAM 23-SBD" for a team name. thisis also my first year in the contest and i dont really know what is going on so i would rather not be captain.

Buellhunter 08-26-2006 05:19 AM

I'm warming up to you already and I don't even know you,LMAO. It's your sence of humor I like, funny guy.lets put up our ages and years we've bin bowhunting and start finding out about one another and where were from. My name is Rocky and I've been bowhunting for 14 years,I'm 51 years young and live and bowhunt in The Edmonton Bow Zone here in ALBERTA. Best bow kill was my 1st, a 172 1/8 BTR 4x5. Still trying to score on a few on the properties I hunt that will go over 200.Best of luck to all of us on this team and God Bless.

RE: 23- Team Official Thread

Well, I guess I will follow the fartman and let ya know a little about myself.

I am 23, live in IL, north central area. I have been hunting for about 4 years but this is my first year with my bow.

I was able to get my first buck last year during first shotgun season here in IL. Looking back I should have passed on him (even though he was a 10 pointer) cause he definately could have used an extra year. I learned a valuable lesson last year from shooting that buck so it is a win/win situation either way.

Though I have only gun huntedbefore, my dad isbig on getting the closest shot possible. I was set up on a trail it would have been only a 25 yard shot with a bow. Hopefully I can transition well.

I bought my bow during shotgun season last year and have been excited ever since. I am looking forward to the contest as an added reason to get out and enjoy the woods.

Dave

i am 24, and live and hunt in central minnesota. i have been bowhunting since i was thirteen and just the past three or four years i have gotten a lot more serious. my best deer came to me my first year. it is only a little six pointer, but is in full velveton my wall!! so that was pretty cool.

i graduated from college two years ago and now i am an electrician. what does everyone else do for a living?

RE: 23- Team Official Thread

Well guys, I ran into some problems today when shooting. Finally I have to bite the bullet and start back at square one.

I current have my rest off, getting ready to look into taking my peep off, along with buying a shorter release. I believe my draw length was a touch too long (from my release being too long), I never was able to get a consistent paper tune and have been putting properly tuning and setting up my bow off until now.

Hopefully I will be able to get to the store sometime in the next week or so, buy some of the things I need and get back to working on setting up my bow.

I will keep you guys posted. I will definately have things in line before the season, I just am a little ticked at myself because I have known all along my bow wasn't paper tuned properly and a bare shaft test proved it once again. Had my nock point so far out of wack it was ridiculous.

I may need some help so hopefully through HNI I can get these problems fixed and be on my way.

Bols

Hope you get that bow into shape soon Bols. If you need some help feel free to ask. We need to pick a name as you all know. I have no problem with any of you guys being the captain and I will do it if you want me to. Names, Buck Baggers, Rut Reapers, Antler Addicts, and all the others previously mentioned. Lets make a goal to get a name and captain picked by the end of the week. Chris

Yes, let's get a name picked and a team captain.
Motown, you've been in the contest before, correct?

All in favor of Motown being our leader, say AYE

Aye!

Let's get this rolling.
I'm going to my hunting land tomorrow with my partner to check stands, move stands, put up new stands.
I am afraid I may have lost permission on one of my best farms to hunt.
I have tried to contact them for 2 weeks now

RE: 23- Team Official Thread

Aye, Honkey for Captain! I personally liked Braizin' Backstraps or Massnificent 10 for a team name. Both are kinda original. But then again, I am still open forsuggestions.

Keep on trying there Buellhunter. I hope you haven't lost your property. Sometimes land owners, if they are farmers, get behind this time of the year as we are trying to get things ready for harvest.

I plan on getting to Gander Mountain in the next couple of days so I can get a start on fixing my bow. Going to buy a Bowmaster Press, a new peep sight, a new rest, and I might be looking into a STS before fall. Any thoughts on the STS on a Hoyt? Does it cause any problems with a stabilizer on the front?

I am sure I will need some assistance once I tackle into this project. I will keep in touch with you guys over the next couple of days.

I should be getting my return kit for my harness sometime this week as well. Just a note, some of you guys may already know this if you have a Summit stand, but2005 Summit Safety Harnesses are being recalled. Check out their website for further details or call 1-800-226-1157. Luckily I have an old corncrib to shoot out of for the time being (so I can practice elevated shots). But I definately need topractice with the climber before fall.

I don't know about you guys but I am definately getting pumped. This is the most I have been checking the boards since the end of last season. Can't wait to get in the woods.

Awesome!

Now that farm better deliever!

Buellhunter 08-28-2006 05:17 AM

RE: 23- Team Official Thread

We shot 11 of the 16 deer we tagged last year on that farm!
They were all doe but I saw a couple really nice bucks probably 140-150 class. I'm going to save my any sex lic. for one of them this year for the team. This is going to be my year to shoot a wallhanger!

Of course now that we are in for sure and am planning on going up today IT'S RAINING! Arrrrrrrrr!
I'm planning on going anyway. We need to check in with another farmer that is a friend of mine and look at a propertyanother owner has been trying to get me to hunt for a couple years now. You can never have too many places to hunt.

Get that bow ready Bols! Time is running short. I know that it is good to do it yourself but with time slipping away, is there a pro shop that could do it up for you? At this time of year that is what I would do for sure.

Hey fellas!
I came into work to day for a while so I figured I'd drop in here.

Oh yeah, AYE! for Motown as Captain.

Great job Buell, on gettin permission for hunting.

Bols, don't get frustrated with your bow, just take your time and it will all come together.

As soon as the SlickTricks show up at my door, I'll be dialing them in.

I'm still planning on being at my lease this week for some heavy scouting, probably Wed, & Thurs.

As for a team name, I'm open.
Another suggestion is
Buck Nutz

Here are a couple things about me other than what I've already mentioned. I'm 32, I live in "deep" Southeast TX. I have 2 leases in East TX. I might get lucky and get a chance to go to West or SWest TX for a hunt. I've killed a few hogs with my bow, but only 1 deer so far. My occupation is "chemical plant operator", and I've been there for 10 years.

Two more members to check in and we'll be set.

RTA47, looks like you might get some rain soon. Hopefully it won't be too bad for ya.

RE: 23- Team Official Thread

I would return to the Hoyt dealer I bought it from, but he is the kind of guy that sets upa bow and if you return with it wanting things changed he will demand they don't need to be.

He didn't really help me with setup much. He is a pretty decent guy aside from the business, his "I'm always right" attitude is what keeps me from going back to him. The guy has experience, I will give him that, but I prefer not to go back to him.

The other shop in town used to sell quite a few Hoyts, but now pushes Mathews something fierce. Don't mind that, but I don't want a bow shoved down my throat. That doesn't really matter at this time since I only need repairs, but he is real big on talking down on other bows. I am not really willing to let him do the repairs.

I got on the Hoyt website and found some other places in the area. Mostly shops 20-30 miles away. I don't really want to do the driving unless I know the shop is capable of fixing the bow.

At this point I just want good customer service. I can't seem to find that around here. Or those that do, don't service Hoyts.

Just got back from the hunting grounds a little while ago.
We got one stand moved and put up another one and checked on the rest. All is good.
We did lose one property, the owner passed away last year and now a gravel company bought it and is going to make a big hole out of a prime woods[&o]. We will no longer be able to hunt that woods, no one will.
I guess the only bright spot is that all the deer that live in that woods will eventuallybe forced to move next door where we can hunt.

Okay fellas, I'll be out til Friday night. BUT, I'll be scoutin my hunting grounds all day Wednesday & Thursday.

i am also an "AYE" for motown as captain. i will be gone from wednesday until next monday or tuesday. i am heading out towestern north dakota on wednesday night to do a little antelope hunting with the mathews. i have never hunted antelope before so it should be a pretty good time.

good luck bols with the bow!!

Thanks mnhuntr. Good luck with the hunt. Definately a good warm up for bow season. Take care and be safe.

Good luck with scouting txmm. Hopefully the trip is worthwhile and you bring back some good info for this season.

Ole' Team 23 will be here when you guysget back.

As for the bow, I was able to get everything I needed except a set of limb brackets I need for the Bowmaster Portable Press. I ordered them through Gander Mtn and they should be in before the end of the week. I can still get a head starton the bow withoutthe brackets so tomorrow I hope to get a chance to get to the range and get the rest dialed in.

I am hoping the hybrid cams on the bow are in tune, but if not, it looks like I might have to find aproshop that could help me get those back in order.

Anyways, enough of my problems. Hope things are doingwell for all of you. Good luck with scouting and shooting.

Hey guys, didn't have much time to respond yesterday when I checked in, so I thought I'd stop by for a little bit longer today. Anyway, I'm from south western Pennsylvania about 20 miles south of Pittsburgh. We've been seeing some quality deer lately and the little bit of scouting that I have done has yielded promising sign. Unfortunately I didn't get out much last year because my wife and I had a newborn on our hands. This year however, I've got over 2 weeks of vacation saved up and plan on scheduling a couple days at the beginning of the season and the rest for the rut. I'll be on the deer for sure, just depends when BUBBA walks by. I'll Leave you with some team name recommendations and a picture of my buck from the '04 season.

My team name recommendations:

On the Razor's Edge
Backwoods and Bucknaked
Arrows through Marrows

ORIGINAL: Buellhunter

I like Antler Mafia
ME TOO!!

Hey fellas, I made it back home safely, but not without a couple of hitches along the way. Wednesday morning a buddy and I drove to my new lease. He had never been to this leasebefore and though he is in his upper thirties, he is very much a beginner to hunting. I wanted him along with me as I scouted for trails, and any deer sign whatsoever. I enjoy teaching him the little bit that I know. Within a couple minutes of arrival another member shows up. So before i can begin scouting for MY areas I decide to show the newbies a quick general tour of this lease and try to point out the boundries, creeks, roads, and the couple of spots that have already been marked. About 15 minutes into the "tour" a forked pine limb punches a huge hole intothe right-rear tire of my wheeler. Luckily this happens on a road that I can drive the truck to. Now, is when I need to tell y'all that I'm driving my father-in-law's truck since I'm in the middle of getting an engine-swap on my truck. His truck also has a couple of quirks about it. The main one is that you cannot put it into "PARK" or the trans will lock-up! The driver has to use the parking brake and Neutral. Okay back to the flat. I hitch a ride back the the campsite to get the truck & trailer. (can you see it coming?) The guy that gave me the ride asked me to follow him down the road in the event he had a question about something, I said OKAY. He took off fairly quickly ahead of me and a towel blew off of his wheeler rack and landed in the road, he obviously didn't notice. So, I stop the truck and hop out to grab the towel for him. As I turned around with the towel in hand I see the truck slowly rolling BACKWARDS!!! I run the short few feet and hop in slamming the brake pedal to the floor. It was too late, the short little #@*% trailer felt like going a different direction and made a mess of the rt-rear quarter panel. I did really good though. I didn't throw anything or hit anything, I just got back in the truck and loaded my limping wheeler. Went into town and confirmed that the hole was too big to plug and too big for a patch to be effective by itself, so it was patched and a tube was inserted. Back to the lease. I headed straight for the hardwoods near one of the creeks on the property.

We spotted lots of "old" rubs. Probably50-60 within a generally small area. I figure it's still a little bit early for rubbing just yet, but I liked most of what I saw. I also found what I think is part of a large shed antler. I've never personally found a shed so I was pretty excited. However, the piece I found was hallow. Is this normal?? I've seen other sheds before, but never a hallow one. This thing has been severely chewed! The fact that it has been chewed, leads me to beleive that it IS a shed and not just a bone. Does that sound accurate?? I'll post some pics of it in a few minutes.

Anyway, I marked a couple of spots that I hope will produce some action. The spots have water, hardwoods(even a few White Oaks in the mix), and extremly thick cover nearby. I also setup my new trail cam at one area. Hopefully something will show up and smile. I'll ease back in there in a couple weeks and hang my stands. Still wanting to see some "fresh" rubs. My season opens Sept. 30th!
