RE: Official Team Rack Masters (17) Thread!!!
well if you still have access to your deer you can use the nifty little score sheet that is provided by HNI found here http://www.whitetaildeer.com/howto/score/score.asp
All you have to do is follow the chart at the top that tells what part of the antler is what, and then punch it into the corresponding spot on the chart...once you get all that apply to your deer hit the calculate button at the bottom All you will need is a very flexible tape measure...and maybe an extra set of hands Hope that helped! |
RE: Official Team Rack Masters (17) Thread!!!
I dont know if the score you reported is too far off though...I did a "visual estimate" using the picture as a guide...and then put what I thought the lengths/circumfrences were into that score sheet and came out with an Underestimated score of 103.5
I know that means nothing but it is a rough estimate... |
RE: Official Team Rack Masters (17) Thread!!!
Hey, first thing I thought of is how the heck did he only score 114. I'm sure if you get him scored professionally hni would be glad to take that score. right?
|
RE: Official Team Rack Masters (17) Thread!!!
Man, i just looked at the pic again. he's way too tall to go 114. plus, we're just doing gross right?
|
RE: Official Team Rack Masters (17) Thread!!!
Alwyshntn,
I think that was Rob was getting at, the deer appears much bigger than the score. |
RE: Official Team Rack Masters (17) Thread!!!
Well I took the advice and looked into the score of my buck and I was off...I used a computer scoring program and got 130 5/8...:)Nice to know now...I PM Rob and told him of the mix up so we'll see what happens...Buckeyebowman helped me out with the measuring so I owe him a big THANK YOU!!!!:) I also didn't realize we were using the SCI scoring and taking gross score...MY FAULT [&:]

RE: Official Team Rack Masters (17) Thread!!!
Sweet! That's a really hard buck to guess on, but man he is tall! Plus, he's, what? 18 inside? That's a good combination! Great buck.
|
RE: Official Team Rack Masters (17) Thread!!!
Yay! The adjusted score has been updated. :)
|
RE: Official Team Rack Masters (17) Thread!!!
Thats great about the updated score! Glad it was caught now instead of at the end of the contest (like the end of last year)...
Should be going out this afternoon if my buddy gets off work in time! |
RE: Official Team Rack Masters (17) Thread!!!
Congrats alwyshntn, that is one great deer to be proud of.Sorry I am getting here so late, just have been hooked up with work lately. What a great way to start off the year. I am just getting ready for the 1st, then it will be game time. Congrats again.
|
RE: Official Team Rack Masters (17) Thread!!!
Thanks everyone :):)Now I'll be doing some doe harvesting and waiting for the 1st of Nov. when I leave for IOWA !!!:):)Good luck to everyone......
|
RE: Official Team Rack Masters (17) Thread!!!
One of these days I want to hunt a state like Iowa, Illinois, etc. That's on my "list". :D Also high on that list is taking a bear and elk with a bow. ;)
|
RE: Official Team Rack Masters (17) Thread!!!
I'm like Millertime, stuck on work. Sorry I haven't been on here more. Congrats alwyshntn!!!! A 130 class buck! Great! I too am getting ready for the first of Oct. Probably get a doe first, but if a buck walks in front of me it's on! I was practicing with my bow last Saturday and I'm good out to 40 yards. Most of my stands are for shots less than 30. Bad news is it sounds like we're going to be working some overtime at work next month. May not get to hunt as much as I wanted. Good thing my hunting spot is right behind my house.
|
RE: Official Team Rack Masters (17) Thread!!!
Man, what a week. I've gone from a fire in the hotel i was staying in on saturday at 4amto baseball sized hail (yes, i said baseball) screaming at my house thanks to 75mph winds.
My siding is just shredded and I spent two hours shop vac'ing glass out of my GRASS! At least I still have a roof over my head, my next door neighbor cannot say the same. Now, if that wasn't enough to keep me out of the woods, I'll probably put in 60+ hours this week. ARGH! I need to be in a tree!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!! |
RE: Official Team Rack Masters (17) Thread!!!
Man RackLuster I hope things start looking up for ya... You definitely deserve a quiet weekend in the woods...Well its 5:53 Friday morning and I'm headed to work. Already have 45hrs in this week and I'm also wanting to get back out in the woods...Its been 90 degrees here all week with alot of humidity but today the high is suppose to be 78 and northernly winds...MAN I WANT TO HUNT!!!!!!Well I'll have Saturday off before going back in on Sunday so I know what I'll be doing Sat. :DSeems like things always get busy at hunting season huh? Good Luck to everyone hunting this weekend and RackLuster I'll put in a prayer for some relief for ya....

RE: Official Team Rack Masters (17) Thread!!!
Hope you guys that are out in the woods are enjoying the time and seeing deer. One more week to go here in PA. :)
|
RE: Official Team Rack Masters (17) Thread!!!
Oct. 15th cant come fast enough. The weather here in NY is cooling off. and some leaves are turning colors now. In the morning the cool air smells like fall. Isn't it great!!!!!!!:D
|
RE: Official Team Rack Masters (17) Thread!!!
I've been out 5 times. all i've seen is a doe and fawn. my buddy saw 5 tonight on the land i hunt, so that is promising. man, the turkeys were out tonight though. never seen anything like it. we probably saw 80 between the two of us.
|
RE: Official Team Rack Masters (17) Thread!!!
Our season will be opening on Saturday and needless to say I'm excited. Now I just need to get through this work week. ;)
|
RE: Official Team Rack Masters (17) Thread!!!
Hey guys...
this is going to be the longest week of the year for you whose season starts on saturday ![]() I went out with my old man friday and saturday (cant hunt on sundays); after 2 weeks of trying my luck at college I had enough and decided to go home for the weekend. That was the trick as it only took about an hour to see deer. My dad had 2 doe within range, but there was too much crap (saplings) in the way to shoot. After the morning sit we met back up in the pole line and hashed over the morning...I happened to notice 3 deer crossing the pole line only 150 yards up...tried to put the stalk on em' but it didnt work out. Tried another spot in the afternoon, on the walk in happened to see a nice doe feeding off the side of the trail, I was ready to go, the old man wasnt, I shot, he didnt, I judged her at 30+, she was really 35+, needless to say I hit low. I gave her some time then followed up on the blood trail, it took me right under some guy in a stand...he had seen it and shot it too (Greeaaat) [:@] So we commenced to following blood, it was a really weak trail as we both failed to hit our marks...we ended up leaving it for the night and trying again on sunday...no luck what a crappy feeling...although I really dont think she is going to/did die from the wounds. On any note my season is starting to look better and we are starting to get some nice cool weather (60's for highs) |
RE: Official Team Rack Masters (17) Thread!!!
WOW! Sorry you didn't recover that doe ME. I know that feeling. I did that last year. Ended up finding her about 3 days later by following the buzzards.
I just checked the offical score card thread, looks like we're in second place! WTG Alwshntn! Like everyone else I'm waiting for Oct. 1st. 1 more week. Hope I don't have to work Sat. It's really cooling off here in Iowa. Forecast is for highs in the low 70s and lows in the 50s this weekend. Sounds like some morning hunts to me. I'm off fo now. Check back in later. |
RE: Official Team Rack Masters (17) Thread!!!
4 more days till the season starts. :) Can't wait!
|
RE: Official Team Rack Masters (17) Thread!!!
Can't wait till Saturday. Went and got my first pics from my new cheap Moultrie digital cam. Works good, had 14 pics and all were bucks, here a couple.

RE: Official Team Rack Masters (17) Thread!!!
Those are some nice looking pics for a "cheap" digital camera. Looks just as good as some of the more expensive cameras in my opinion.
Good luck going after those bucks Millertime. :) |
RE: Official Team Rack Masters (17) Thread!!!
YOU SUCK!
I get pics of does and fawns and they sit in front of my camera until it runs out of film. |
RE: Official Team Rack Masters (17) Thread!!!
awesome pictures millertime! Good luck on your quest to getting one of 'em
Hey JeramyK, I was just looking at the official scorecard and I saw that millertime wasnt included in our team...might want to mention that to rob!? saturday is coming quick for you guys! |
RE: Official Team Rack Masters (17) Thread!!!
Thanks for pointing that out. I've sent a PM to Rob to ask for the change. :)
|
RE: Official Team Rack Masters (17) Thread!!!
I missed a doe by a mile tonight. back to the range for me. argh! I've never missed a deer by that much. think i peeked. or maybe i need a new bow, yea that's it.
|
RE: Official Team Rack Masters (17) Thread!!!
Did you miss high/low? Just curious. Happens to all of us at some point. :)
|
RE: Official Team Rack Masters (17) Thread!!!
I was on up/down. I missed about 6 FEET (almost too ambarrassed to put that in the post) to the left at 32 yards. I don't know what happened. I had that pin right behind her shoulder. she was broadside, standing still....It's never happened like that before.
I shot at 30 yardsall year and I missed my block one time (tired arm, really!) and never even got close any other time. I could not believe it when I saw that arrow veer off that far. Even though I saw it with my own eyes I didn't really believe it until I found the arrow. I even looked for blood. lol! I'm just glad it was a clean miss. She'sbeen hanging around for at least two years (has a black spot on her shoulder and I have TONS of pictures of her). I'll get another crack at her and I won't miss the next time. |
RE: Official Team Rack Masters (17) Thread!!!
I'm with ya. I'd rather have a clean miss than a poor hit. Maybe the arrow caught a branch or sapling? Guess it's water under the bridge at this point.
|
RE: Official Team Rack Masters (17) Thread!!!
HAHAHA!!! Rack, I'm not laughing at you, I'm laughing with you. I did the same thing last year on a young 8 point. Only he was at 15 yards, not 30. Will Primos said it best on their new "Truth About Bowhunting 2" DVD, "If you bowhunt long enough, you're gonna miss."
Well I went out this morning and sat in the same treestand that I missed that 8 pointer last year. I saw a big doe with 2 yearlings, but they never got closer than 80 yards away. I'll try another spot this afternoon. Felt great to actually get out in the woods with a bow in my hand. |
RE: Official Team Rack Masters (17) Thread!!!
I was up till almost 1am last night shooting my bow. :D Even though I knew I wasn't getting up early for the opener I was still excited. Once my wife gets home in about an hour I'll be heading to the woods for an evening hunt. I can't wait.
|
RE: Official Team Rack Masters (17) Thread!!!
I went out this morning for a few hours...saw 3-4 doe no bucks
Went out last night as well and saw 2-3 deer; 1 of which I am sure was a buck...just out of range at 55 yards or so Good luck to all you October 1 season openers! |
RE: Official Team Rack Masters (17) Thread!!!
I had alot of deer movement tonight.I don't think I went more than 20 minutes without seeing a deer. Unfortunately none were bucks. Still exciting though. I have 3 doe permits to fill but unfortunately I didn't get the chance tonight. I only had 2 doe step into a good shooting lane but both were about 40 yards slightly quartering towards me. Wasn't a shot that I wanted to take.
I did have an encounter while on the ground when I arrived to my stand. Had a young doe come about 6 yards away directly to my left. All I could do was watch out the corner of my eye. She could tell something wasn't right and was skittish but eventually she took off. |
RE: Official Team Rack Masters (17) Thread!!!
How are the rest of you guys doing so far?
I'm going to try to get back on stand Wednesday. It's been pretty warm so far this week and it's in the low 80's till Thursday when some cooler air and rain move in. I'm going to come into work late on Thursday and see if I can benfit from the temp drop. :) |
RE: Official Team Rack Masters (17) Thread!!!
Things are starting to pick up a bit here at college...not like it was last year but what can you do!? Too many acorns and apples for them to follow the same routines as last year...I will figure them out though.
My buddy got a nice six pointer the other day...probly score 80-90 I talked to my dad the other day and he has them running rampant back home...he and another guy we hunt with saw 17 one night last week with one dandy 8 pointer in the mix and a few smaller bucks. I will be heading back there this coming weekend to hunt friday night and all saturday before I leave for my moose hunt on sunday! Good luck to the whole team! :D |
RE: Official Team Rack Masters (17) Thread!!!
ME, that sounds like a heck of a weekend you have coming up. I'd love to go moose hunting some day. :)
It looks like we have a few team members that haven't been on the boards in over a month. Hopefully they'll find their way back soon and give us an update. ;) |
RE: Official Team Rack Masters (17) Thread!!!
It was a slow weekend. Only deer I saw was a doe that had just been hit by a car. Cop shot it right in front of my 5 year old daughter. long story...
i'm taking friday off to do a little hunting and a lot of scouting. i'll probably be out wednesday night too. Still trying to fill a doe tag. I broke my string of 6 years in a row getting a deer in september. oh well, it's a long season. |
RE: Official Team Rack Masters (17) Thread!!!
Well, went back out again this morning. Only saw 3 deer from first light up until 10am. The first deer came by when it was still pretty dark. All I could make out was the white tail flicking. The second deer came down the same trail about 30 minutes later. Looked like a 2 yr old doe. She was coming straight towards me at about 60 yards but when she got to about 45 yards she changed direction and stayed out of bow range. About 7:45am another deer came down the trail. This time I saw antlers! Unfortunately though he was only a 2x2 (4pt) which is illegal in PA. He came on the path that I had expected the doe to follow. Broadside at about 18 yards. [&:]
Oh well, guess it just wasn't meant to happen today. With the way my work/family schedule looks I probably won't make it back out until Saturday morning. |
