Good Question, If there's a fixed rule I have not herd it in 40 years of bowhunting. I wax mine when it begins to feel or look dry and have never had a problem. Keepingit waxed well during hunting season will extend its life quite a bit, a dry string will fuzz up in no time dragging it across brush and such.
