You will be grandfathered in as long as you register your weapon with the state. If not, you will be charged with a felony!
This is what they did in Chicago 20 years ago with handguns. Then they closed the registry and effectively made it illegal to own handguns. No law explicitly outlaws them, but you have to be a registered owner, and they won't let you register.
