RE: diaphragm calls
I respectfully disagree with the advice to start beginners on single reed calls with no cuts. I can't remember where this myth got started, but after 26 years of using diaphram calls almost exclusively to yelp and cut with,I can't get a single reed call to break. I can't imagine a beginner getting one to break.
I took my 10 year son to the NWTF convention again this year in Nashville. Last year the boys at the Primos booth sold him that Sonic Dome thing in a single or straight double reed call. My son could make "turkey-like sounds" on it but couldn't get it to break into the second note and eventually gave up. We went back this year and talked to a bunch of the smaller callmakers selling diaphram calls, asking them what a good call would be for my son. Without fail they all recommended three or 4 reed calls with v-cuts as the easiest calls to blow that they made. These type of calls have some rasp and are easy to break. After only a week my son sounds good enoughto call a turkey using"The Lap Dance" by DynamicCalls from Georgia. He can yelp and cut fairly well and tells me that this 4-reed callis so much easier to blow.
