I am sure there are those who prepared a eulogy for the 1911 and the .45 ACP when the gooberment misakenly "killed" it for the 9 MM.
You could hear the faint echos of "taps" for the 1911 when the "Glock" styles became popular! However, as the 1911 and .45 ACP approach their 100th birthday, the 1911 is the most copied gun in history, and sales have probably never been better!
