Default RE: Distance Accuracy?

You know I am curious where these old wives tails come from. I was at my familys house in Ky a little while ago. And met up with a old deceased friends father. He showed me a 357mag with 10" barrel and said it would probably shoot 1" groups at 100 yards. It might, but doubtful. he was under the idea that its long barrel would make it so much more accurate.

I just wonder where these crazy ideas come from.
Back when I was in the military I bought a Browning Hi Power from a coworker and when we went to shoot it he brought along a contender pistol which I believe had a 12 inch scoped barrel on it (might have been 14"). It would shoot honest 1" groups at 100 yards from a bench with handloaded .357 rounds. I was pretty impressed. The Hi Power was no slouch with handloads either. Luckily have gave me quite a few with the gun when I bought it from him.
