Depends on the situation. Here in MS, I like to get 20' or better if the tree will allow it, because these dang deer know to look up. Down side is the higher you go, the less chance you have at getting both lungs. When I hunted in TN, I got a decent buck 12' off the ground in a ladder stand, from about 8 yds--that deer never looked about eye level.

Use natural cover to your advantage (another problem I have where I hunt--not enough cover to hide my big butt), and be sure to practice shooting from the stand--it's different. Bend at the waist, get used to the stand and limbs being in the way.
