Cockleburrs don't seem to stick to deer hair that much and don't seem to bother them. If the area is as large as you say it is, they may very well have been bedding in it, or they may have been just passing through for one reason or another. Have you scouted the surrounding area to find out if they are regulars to the locale? You should be able to find rather well used entry and exit points if they are. Set up on one of these entry/exit paths with a tree stand if a tree is available, or a ground blind if not. Good Luck.
