Monotecs are great heads, but you will have to sharpen them first. I think thier website has some tips on how to get them sharp. I really don't think there is a "best" head for everyone. You have to match the broadhead to your bow setup, and to the features you want. Some heads are better than others, and there is some real junk floating around as well. I do feel however the monotec's are one of the better heads on the market and should work very well with most setups. The thing to keep in mind with elk is penetration. They are a lot bigger than any deer you will see, and in order to get a pass through, or a least enough penetration you need well tuned equipment with razor sharp broadheads of modest cutting diamteter.
