3D dad, your set up is just fine for black bears. I took a good size boar this spring on a spot and stalk with a 64# bow using carbons tipped with 125 grain shockwave mechanicals, total weight is around 440 grains. My buddy took a bear with his 70# bow using spitfire 125 grains, 400 grain total arrow weight. All shots were full pass throughs.
I'm very impressed with the performance of the shockwaves on that bear. You are generating a little more fps and ke with your set up than mine, and if you are using a Mathews bow, that eliminates all doubt in my mind. <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>
As for setting up to intercept the bears, I'm really not sure. We found some very obvious trails that the bears took in and out of the beaches and forest, but there were so many of them, and we never really saw a pattern. I like being on the ground, one on one, there is no greater rush, so I guess that is what I would recommend. Ambushing seems to work the best, although bears are generally easier to stalk than most other big game. I'm not saying it is easy though!
Best of luck and make sure to get back on here and let us know how you did! Welcome to the boards and hope you enjoy it here!
