If you look to go on the cheap side for a pack, you could always go to the Army Surplus store and check into a standrad size rucksack with or without frame. Decent size for things and sturdy. You could also look for a Ranger ruck, as they are a bigger version of the standard rucksack, and if good enough for the best fighting men in the U.S. military, then good enough for any common folk.
