I thought about doing the same thing and melting them down if they didn't work, I ended up getting a box locally and trying them first and decided they wernt worth the time for now. I have enough lead right now and a dentist who is saving it for me for free (maybe 10 to 15 pounds a year). I have maybe 75 to 100 pounds right now and only go through about 20 pounds a year so I'm set for a while. The only thing that might increase my usage is the fact that a friend recently bought a conical mould from mountain molds for a 460gr No Excuses style bullet. If he lets me borrow it I could go through some lead real quick casting a few hundred of those.
