RE: Stalking Deer.
I kill deer every year using the spot and stalk technique with my bow.Ive had much worse luck still hunting, Ive killed deer this way as well but its much harder IMHO.
Spotting and stalking a bedded animal you already know where the animals laying, you have time to choose which route youll take, know within a few yards how close you are to the animal, and have time to get your weapon ready once you get in range of the animal.
Still hunting its easy to get sloppy, you have no idea where the animals laying, its possible to walk right past them if your not paying attention. You can move to fast, skyline yourself, or make unwanted noises brushing up against something, stepping on a stick, etc.. at the worst time. And when you do get close if your not ready the animal can be out of range before you can ever get your weapon up much less aim.You can be off a little bit and have animals get up that offer no shot.It only takes a few seconds to totally screw up a whole days hunt.To get good at it requires a patience a lot of guys dont have, I get sidetracked pretty easy myself and my mind starts to wander to other things after a couple hours, probably why Ive had so limited success with it.Its easier with a gun, but still can be quite frustrating. If you decide to try this out good luck, I hope you have the patience I lack. Best advice I can offer is if you feel yourself losing focus on what your doing get the hell out of there or youre just asking for something to go wrong.Like I said, I can only hunt this way for a few hours, other guys can keep it up all day and never get sloppy.
