How many shots were fired between cleanings? If a guy cleans his rifle frequently enough, then you could use Butches bore shine with patches only, and avoid brushing at all!
A simple rule of thumb is to take a pass through the barrel with a cleaning patch for every shot fired! If the barrel wasn't cleaned for years and firedlots of rounds, then the brush will HAVE to be used!
