Default RE: 405 Winchester

ORIGINAL: James B

Does anyone have the newest Hornady Manual? I would like to get the info on loading the 405 Winchester. I saw the data in the new manual at a store but didn't pick it up yet. What is the SD of their 300 grain bullet and maybe one load. Thanks.

I needed a new squirrel gun. There are getting to be lots of those saber tooth squirrel around here.
Assuming the bullet is .406" in diameter, the sd is: 300/7000/.164836 (.406 squared) = .2599 .

If possible, use 400-grain bullets in your .405. Their SD is much better at 400/7000/.164836 = .3466. This SD makes the .405 adequate for heavy, thick-skinned game.

(Our buffalo -[bison] may not be as hard to kill as a cape Buffalo, but it would not surprise me to find that they are! They certainly weigh as much, or more!)

Here's some Hodgdon data for the .405 with 400-grain bullets.
