Default RE: Is it possible to do taxidermy at home

Wow, nothing like taking over someones post!

I do all my taxidermy at home. I've done it that way for yrs. I have a work area setup in the back of my basement, thats attached right to my garage. My basement has a propane stove unit, and it works good for drying my mounts. It works great for me. I consider myself more of a part time taxidermist. I only do it during the winter, and into spring. Then I'm done for the yr.
I don't have alot of overhead like the big shops. No hired help, no big equipment. I made my own fleshing board, and used to strictly use a hand fleshing tool, and knives. Now I have a mini flesher that works very well. I use a counter top mounted, mounting stand. Small 2hp air compessor, Paashe paint gun. I do all my own tanning using the Liqua tan method. It saves turnover time & $. So in all honesty I probably make more $ per mount, becasue of less overhead than the big guys. But I obviously don't make as much limiting my working time, and what I take in. But it helpsto pay for my rainy day habits, and buy extra things I want.
