I'll probably be one of the few to tell you this, but I think the .308 is superior to the 30-06 for deer sized game. It has less recoil. It has a flatter trajectory. It travels only 100 to 150 fps slower. If you add the advantages vs. the disadvantages the .308 can't be beat. Also, there is a reason why it as an commercial Nato round is still used as THE sniper caliber of choice. Accuracy. You don't see too many 30-06 sniper rifles hanging around do you? Just my opinion.
Designated marksman in the military/police use the .308 because they'll be engaging a human, not a big game animal. Which is where you step it up to the 30-06.
