I've done, and here is what I'd suggest. Go with an outfitter and guide especially for the first trip, or go with someone who has done it before. Personally, I prefer an outfitter because most of the time they'll get you back further safely then the ordinary camper can get and can ussually get you to where the elk are. There are good and bad outfitters though and research, references and recommendations are a must.
