Default My review on the win. mod. 70 black shadow

The Winchester model 70 black shadow in 30-06 is a fine rifle for someone who doesn't mind a synthetic stock. It shoots best with light ammo around 150-165 grains. I used Remington bullets and was very disapointed with the 180 grain bullets on deer, they just didn't expand very well. With the 180 grain bullets I got 3" groups at 100 yards which is all I needed it for. The Remington 150 grain bullets did much better with a group of under an inch at 100 yards and a great hole through a deer. The Winchester 165 grain bullets was about right in the middle, good weight, great groups, but not as big of a hole. The rifle it's self is a little more picky about ammo than most 30-06s' I've seen. I like the 3 position safety arm, but I wish they made it a little more quiet. It's a little heavier than most rifles of the same price range so it doesn't seem to have as much kick. It also comes with a scope if you buy it at walmart. The scope is a simmons 8 point. I didn't like this scope at all. It fogs up way to much, and doesn't gather as much light in low light conditions as you would expect. In short, you don't loose any shooting light, but you sure don't gain any either. But it holds a zero pretty good if you put lock tite on all the screws. The magazine kind of sucks because it is so weak. The bolt is weak too so alot of times you go to cycle another round and come up with air. The extractor isn't great. The trigger has alot of creep and it's heavy. But If you want an inexpencive rifle, have the trigger adjusted, put a new scope on it, and find the right ammo it is a great hunting gun. If you want a good rifle straight from the factory, go with a Remington 700, or savage. I give this rifle a 5 out of 10 for it's price range.
