RE: Bullets exploding in 270 WSM
I have also had problems with the Hornady SST in magnum .270's. Even at 400 yards, I had a bit too much expansion on a big whitetail buck. And on an elk at 150 yards, it just exploded without penetrating even 8". Used them once on antelope and was very favorably impressed - perfect expansion at 250 yards on this light boned speedster.
If you can find some, the original 130 grain Swift Scirocco is still the best bullet I have used in 35 years of hunting with the .270. Also very good is the 140 Accubond, the 150 grain Sierra BT, the 150 Hornady Interlock, and the 150 grain Speer Grand Slam. I mostly hunt elk, so these bullets may be just a tad on the tough side for deer.
For deer, the 140 Nosler Ballistic Tip should be about perfect.
