I haven't owned a shotgun before so I'm not completely sure about the reliability and difficulty cleaning. Is the 1100 more difficult that the 870 to clean?

Not really. Especially if you get a cleaning kit like the OTIS one. No rigid cleaning rod, but flexy cable. Does as good as any other. Plus, the 1100/11-87 are quite good for skeet. I have a buddy who shot comps with his. Did quite well too.
