Default RE: Favorite 30-30 loads

ORIGINAL: bigcountry

Think I am going to start with either 3031 or 4064 with 170gr hornady FP.
I always figured it was a waste of time to load 30-30, as I rarely shoot it, but these dies have been here for years, never used, and winter is comeing so have a toy to play with.
I hear ya on that one ive been tinkering with my 30-30 loads every now and then. Ive got a load ive used for plinking I got a bunch of 150 grain sierra pro hunters from a guy 5 boxes of 100 to be exact for 3 bucks a box ive been loading those over 25 grains H4895 once i figured out what seating depth the gun likes these loads are pure tack drivers and have ultra light recoil comparible to a 223 they are pushing probably around 1600 fps. Another load Im working up for yote hunting this winter is a hornady 110 grain RNSP over 37 grains H4895 books shows a MV of 2605 fps havent quite figured out all the kinks yet but im getting 2 inch groups at 100 yards Im gonna tinker with it some more I know I can get better then that with my plinker loads its shooting inch groups at 100 yards and with factory core junks 170 grain the gun will shoot less than an inch at 100 yards. im thinking about trying out 110 grain V-max's and using the gun as a single shot would like to see where that goes. A friend of mine has an old savage 340c bolt action 30-30 he's lookin to sell for 200 bucks im thinking about buying it for the fact I can use pointed bullets in it and have the advantage of a magazine.
