Just to get him used to the "bang," a .410 would do fine. A .22 is probably going to be much cheaper to shoot than a .22 mag or .17.
Just remember don't go too far, too fast! A flinching habit is easy to aquire, and hard to break! Work him up to a .243, and go from there! It is a great minimum for deer!
