Default VA deer never heard of the growl?

My buddy came in from TN yesterday and brought me a M.A.D. Buck growl. Well, I was like a kid on Christmas morning playing with my new toy all day yesterday.

Today was the big "field test." I got setup this morning and made a few grunts.Moments later, squirrels were barking and I thought that a deer was possibly on the way. He never came (at least I thought he didn't.) So I decided to grunt followed by a growl or two. No sooner than I got the call back in my pocket a deer scurries up the mountain. He appeared to be a smaller buck but he decided he did not like what he heard. The buck would stop every now and then and look back. So he wasn't totally spooked out of his skin.

My theories:

-This smaller buck was intimidated by the "growl" and decided to get the hell out of Dodge.

-He saw/smelled me since I was hunting on the ground w/ my gun. I would have taken my bow but this was my first morning hunting this new spot on this particular property.

- Last but not least, the cool new trend hasn't made it to VA yet.

I'm not giving up on it so soon though. I will test it more next week and hopefully have a better story to tell with success.
