The .222 will work for deer if you don't have anything bigger, but it needs a bullet that is constructed for the job. Most factory ammo is loaded for varmints/predators. Don't use thin-jacketed bullets. They fragment too quickly and don't get enough penetration.

If you are going to use it, get close and shootthem in the neck.
