RE: bullets for long reach
The boat-tail on a bullet only begins to have a really marked effect on the ballistic performance of the projectile as it nears, then drops below, the speed of sound. Since with a round like the .30/'06, this happens in the vicinity of 600 or more yards downrange,the boat-taildoesn't make any difference at all at hunting ranges... But it sure looks cool! In addition, it makes starting the bullet easier when loading ammo.....
