Just re-read my instruction book to make sure. The last line on the backpacking instructions read: "When backpacked the gripper teeth of both sections will be in the upright position." If you do that then the cables will be up.

I agree with arkansawdeerguy---this is a bulkey stand---but real easy to climb with and super comfortable.
