Default RE: Gut shot, how long to lay?

Now for the long winded story,
Set up behind an overgrown field of about 25 acres, its full of 6-10' tall "sticker" trees, 1 side is bordered by about 10 acres of bambo so thick (4-8" apart) You cannot get through it, allot of the bambo is dead and brittle and makes a loud popping noise when You break it. The other side is bordered by woods and a fire road about 30 yards into the woods, The front is the county road and where We park, The back (where I was setup) is woods that roll off down a hill, about 200 yards down is about 50 acres of laurel and thicket (bedding area).
I made My way through the over grown field, and dropped off into the woods about 25 yards and over behind the bambo thicket, Put the Summit climber on and went up 25 feet, secured the stand, and was making a few adjustments/securing bow/packbefore sitting down, heard a snap and turned to see a nice buck 20 yards away looking at Me, he trotted off.
Settled in and 15 min latter it sounded like someone let off a string of M-80's in the bambo, BAM BAM POP POP BAM POP BAM ..............
Some thing was tearing through all the dead bambo just plowing it over, it was very loud, almost painfull. out comes a doe, followed by the buck I got, and 2 more smaller bucks. She was now walking real slow and peeing everywhere, she walked by me 15 yards out broadside, just a shaking and peeing, the bucks held back behind Me, The large buck started following nose to the ground, stopped looking around, did a tight 360, looked around, and finaly started following her, as he went behind a tree I went to draw, I am shooting over the right rail of the stand, My HSS vest strap is over My right shoulder and in the way of My anchor point, I am now at full draw, He stops broadside in the wide open 12 yards out and I cannot get a good anchor, lean foward to get the strap out of the way, anchor but feel the lower limb contact the climber rail, tippy toes release.
When I saw the arrow go I knew I had screwed up. perfect height about 12" back, pass thru. He jumped ran 20 yards directly infront of Me, broadside. I reached around and gabbed onto an arrow from the quiver and slowly brought it around. He was just standing there looking around, each time He would look the other way I would move, finally got it nocked and was clipping on the release and he walk foward 5 steps behind a holly/vine thicket. He stayed there for about 20 min, even laid down. He then walked directly away then turned up towards the field (very slowly) and was gone. When I got down, I was NO blood where He stood for 20+ minutes.
Next morning, just knew He went into the bambo, spent 2.5 hours in the field/brush/bambo, nothing. on the other side of the field (the way I knew he did not go) I found a small pile of white hair, nothing else, then I could make out some turned over wet leaves, went back to where he entered the field and followed the logical path to the hair, and noticed turned leaves here and there, and just follwed in that same direction, which crossed the fire road, I grid searched about 100 yards into these woods and found nothing, and gave up and was about to walk up the fire road to the truck, then decided might as well walk up through the woods instead, after all I had been up and down this road twice this morning. So I went about 150 yards into the woods and ended up in a pine thicket and there he lay. Stinky deer.
They are rutting hard, 2nd year bow hunting, 1st year in the rut, never knew!!
