My first post was "Where and When to Begin".
From the great responses I have been receiving (by the way, thank you all very much. I’m getting more out of this than what I ever imagined) it sounds like I’m on the right track.
Again I have a story to help the readers understand my situation and where we stand already. My question is at the bottom so you can skip this to get to that.
I love hunting and just want my son to enjoy it also if he chooses. Like I said, I didn’t get that opportunity as a child and I don’t hold that against my father at all for he is a great father who chose to take up another sport. When I was ready to hunt, he helped me get the things I would need for and after a successful hunt. We just got started a little later than maybe the average kid that now hunts at my age. I’ll never forget when he was showing me how to start when field dressing a deer…He yelled for our miniature wiener
dog too come here! He flipped her over on her back and began showing me where to start and how far to go, open this and cut that…I’ll never forget.
Now, with my son…He seen my buck last year after it was field dressed and hanging under our carport. It didn’t seem to bother him and I don’t recall too many questions. I got a late start to this October bow season but as soon as I had a chance, I told my son that I was going to go to the land I hunt and look around and maybe see some deer out in the field (My grandparents have a house way back off the road and this is a situation where there could be deer feeding on acorns in the backyard and from the second floor deck, we can see the field very well). Chances of seeing deer are high. I asked him if he wanted to go and he said no, I don’t think so. No big deal, I continued on my way and told him and my wife I would be back soon. When I arrived home, he asked if I seen anything. I sure did I told him and you could tell he was disappointed that he didn’t go. He then asked if we could go the next day. The following day (Monday) I left work as early as possible and got home to take him with me after we got his camo on and sure enough, we watched some more deer.
Last night 11-20-06 I was talking to my wife about taking him maybe starting next year because it’s starting to get much colder now. She was okay with that just as soon as I get a blind. I’m pretty sure my son wasn’t really paying much attention to us but several hours later he asked me when he would be able to go hunting with me and did he need to get a lot bigger. I just smiled and laughed. We will go soon enough I told him. It just doesn’t get much better than that especially the day this is all brought up.
Questions: Is tracking the deer to much with him? What about him watching the deer being field dressed?
I promise that any of my other posts will be shorter. Thanks to everyone that has responded.
