Default RE: 450/400 Nitro in Ruger #1

ORIGINAL: doubleA

I have had a #1 in 416 Rigby sinceRugerfirst came out with them in the early 90's.
The cost of factory ammo is a bit high but handloads can be had pretty cheap. My particular rifle is "scary" accurate and is a solid performer. I suppose the company guru's figure they can find a few more hunters that are going to want anothertraditional African carttridge with the 450/400 Nitro.
I think I am going to pass due to already having the Rigby which ballistics surpass the Nitro.
For some reason, beyond my comprehension, the big-bore boys have been yelling for a .404 Jeffrey and/or .450/.400 (essentially a rimmed version of same!) for years, even after both Ruger and CZ have offered reasonably priced .416 Rigbys. Since the Rigby is a better round than either the .404 or .450/.400, I don't quite get it. In fact, it is easy to load the .416 down to .404 levels. I cannot believe that .404 or .450/.400 brass or bullets are cheaper, so what's the charm of the Jeffrey? Name? I'd just as soon own something called Rigby.....
