Thanks to all those who responded to my post. This is my crossbow hunting setup.
-2006 Excalibur Phoenix 175#Recurve Crossbow
-Excalibur Excel Dacron Endless Loop String
-Excalibur Vari-Zone Scope
-Leupold RX-1 Rangefinder
-XX75 2219 Aluminum 20" Bolts
-Nap Spitfire 100gr 3bld mechs & Wasp Hammer SSt 100 gr 3bld fixed bhds
-fletch is three 5"left wing True Flight parabolic die cut feathers all yellow.
-bolt end caps are solid aluminum flat end caps
*I polish the aluminum end ecaps on a buffing wheel with jewlers wax.
This removes any sharp endes around the circumference of the end cap
that could wear on the string center serving. Plus the shiny end caps
show up better when looking for a spent bolt.
-my fletching is done with a 35 year old Jo-Jan Multi-Fletcher that I have
slightly modified to produce the quality fletch that I want. I also use the
newer Jo-Jan Crossbow Nock End Receivers in the Multi-Fletcher to
fletch with the flat end caps on the bolts. The Jo-Jan Crossbownock receivers require some modification to theolder Jo-Jan Multi-Fletchers to work.
-I use a straight fletching clamp set with a slight right to left offset looking
from the nock end of the bolt.
-I use Fletch-Tite Platinum Fletching Cement to install feathers on shafts.
-I wipe my aluminum shafts clean with lacquer thinner on a rag before I
install the feathers.
-I use high vaccum grease to lube the shooting rail and arrow channel of
my crossbow. Thisgrease is a stiff, non-melting silicone clear lubricant that maintains consistency from -40F to +500F. It is nonoxidizing, nongumming, nontoxic and insoluble in water and most solvents. I have found thatsubstance to produce a slickerlongerlasting surface on my shooting rail and arrow channel. It also results in less wear to the center serving on the string.I apply a thin coating of the grease with my finger tip all along the length of the shooting rail and arrow channel. I wipe off the excess greae with a clean dry rag. The surface that is left is greaseless, extremely slick and long lasting. I also apply some to the center serving of the bow string in the same manner.
*CAUTION: I do not recommend that any use this grease in place of the
manufacturersrail lube. I can only tell you what I use.
-my homemade crossbow quiver:
I use a 2 1/2" inside diameter platic pvc pipe 22" long.Pvc end caps are used on each end. One end the end cap isglued on and the other end the end capwill slide on and off. I line the inside of the fixed end cap with soft foam to protect the broadheads and keep them from rattling. I carry 3 broadheadbolts andone judo point bolt with different colored fletching.
The case is camo painted and rigged to attach horizontally to my hunting fanny pack. Thearrow case protects my arrowsand fletchings from weather, protects me from the sharp blades of the broadhead, easy to access arrows and carries arrows quietly and safely.
I wish all a safe and successful crossbow hunting season.
