Default RE: Easy First Kills

I hunted 9 days of deer season -- all day long for 5 of those 9 days, including the last day of the season -- before I shot my first deer 15 minutes after sunset on the last day of the 2002 Oklahoma deer season, therefore with 15 minutes remaining in the legal hunting season. I had passed on a small buck on opening morning about 9 AM who stood around for about 15 minutes about 100 yards away, across a pond. My host had been bragging about what big bucks there were on this property I natually decided I would hold out and shoot one of the big bucks.

In 2003 and 2004 I took a deer on opening morning. In 2005 I took a deer the evening of opening day. This might be looked at as being easy hunting, and perhaps it is. Nevertheless I relish my hunting time. I don't hunt for challenge or for big antlers, I hunt for the good delicious venison that I harvest and for the joy of being in the woods at this time of year. Now if it was as easy as walking up to a cow grazing in a field and blasting away . . . I guess I might give up deer hunting, but it isn't that easy where I hunt.
