RE: NY No Deer?
We're in southeast Albany County, hunt areas along the Hudson River and northern Catskill / Heldeburg mtns.
Opening day brought three bucks, two nice tens and a plump six for our group. I took a 160# 9 pointer the following Sunday morning. Some doe were spotted from the stands during the first few days but at approx. 250 yards too far for a 12 GA from my stand.
Noticing the same thing, either there aren't as many deer in the herds as reported or they aren't moving around as much as usual. Our drives haven't produced noticable movement.
We had snow on the ground opening day which showed some good sign, it melted and now that we have snow on the ground again it shows less movement through the usual areas. Good number of hunters in the popular spots, but not as many as last year when we had 40+ degree weather for the first half of regular gun season. The thermometer on my jacket said 17 degrees when I climbed up into my stand at 6:30 this morning. Got the next four days off to fill the rest of those doe tags.... good luck to all!
