This happened to me when I was 15. We that is to say my brother in law and myself scared up a really nice 8 point while making a push. I came right out by me about 40 yards away. I put my gun up on him and when I did he snorted and took I shot he went down only to get back up again. I shot again keep in mind this deer is running through the woods. I hit him again but high and back just below the spine. He went down then also but got back up. He happen to run right twards my brother in law and who was only like 50 yards from me and he downed him. Of course in his eyes it was his deer and in my familys eyes it was mine. As we always hunted as a family that whoever draws first blood it's there deer. It was an 18 inch inside spread and the largest deer I ever shot and I am now 38 years old. I just grit my teeth every time I have to look at it on his wall. IMO he who draws first blood gets the deer.
I think we are talking Archery, gun is a whole another story.
This happen to my dad, a neighbor shot one in the rump. It crossed the river and the guy shot it on our side in the guts(I watch him). Dad went and fond the deer still alive and killed.
It was a nice 12, Dad kept it, why the neighbors do not like us.
Each event is differnet, I do not think there is a rubber stamp fix.
