I got a 7mm-08 for my 12 year old son and even though he took down a cow with one shot, I still kind of regret not getting him the .308.
Why? The 7mm-08 is fine. If he was able to kill a cow elk with one shot, he can hunt elk with a .25-06 if he wanted to!
