I have been doing what you propose (I think what you are proposing) for several years. When hunting season starts i shoot the gun, usually 3 times at a target to verify that it shooting where I am aiming, I swab it with windex and put a very light coat of sheath or break free in the barrel and it will stay that way all season. I will not really clean it til the end of the season and on occasion depending on the weather Iwill refresh and keep thatvery light coat of oil in the barrel.

It certainly has worked for me.
