ORIGINAL: Remington55

Went out to sight in my brand new Kodiak Mag 50.cal the other day. Shot once (off a lead sled...rock steady) and hit nothing. Walked up and shot from about 15 yards and hit about 4 feet low. I adjusted my scope all the way (cant be moved up anymore) up and im still hitting 3 inches low at 15 yards! It has luepold mounts and a luepold scope. Everythings tight but it does look like the scope is leaning a little down. Has anyone else had this problem. Please tell me i dont have to shim it.
Everyone who has used scopes much has had similar problems. Before shimming, you can try reversing the scope mount rings, swapping the front & rear rings, if your mount will permit this. I have seen mounts where swapping the rings solved the problem.

When installing a new scope, it is always best to use an optical collimator to get thescopeadjusted to at least be able to hit the target paper before firing the first shot.In addition, one is well advised to shoot the first couple of shots at no more than 25 yards, and get the scope adjusted at that distance first before moving back to 50 then 100 yards.

I have had to use a shim or two under the rear of a scope tube a couple of times to get it pointing down a little more in relation to the bore in order to get enough elevation after running out of internal adjustment. My gun was shooting low, just like yours, but I was using a mount in which the front and rear rings were NOT interchangeable (Redfield Jr. type). I cut my shims out of an aluminum beer can with a pair of scissors, and you couldn't even tell they were there unless you were specifically looking for them. And there is nothing weak about using shims in your mount ring.......
