Great Bill, They really can sneak up on you. Just when you think it's "only a squirrel" you turn to see a deer. It happened to me last year. This year I had to shoot a doe first in my zone and I had set a time to get down that day I thought about getting down 5 min. early but said no I will wait. Just then I heard a noise, since I had not seen a squirrel I thought it was a deer. As I turned I was pleased to see a 1-1/2 old doe with no fawns. She walked past me and at 10 yards I shot. No problem with recovery but I did have to go into the thick stuff to get her out. I like that kind of surprise.
