Actually, the right and left helical is used more for self bows or bows where there is not shelf or rest at all. The individual is shooting of their knuckles. The right/left helicals were used mostly to prevent getting cut.

Vanes can be used with a helical, but extra time is needed in the drying process. The glue has to be completely dry before removing the clamp because most vanes will have "memory" and will want to remain straight.
