There is a paradox to arrow flight; Your buddy is correct about using the pin for your longer yardages at such close distances. If you do a search you may be able to find more information about it.

However, imo, a shot from 20 feet plus up at less than 5 yards is marginal. A one lung shot or worse would be the likely outcome.
