RE: Black bears attacking?
They will run if they see you in the woods. Now if you get between a sow and her cubs, that would be a whole-nuther story. I've heard of probably 2-3 black bear attacks in the last couple years, tops. You are correct about the playing possum with a black bear, if you play dead you soon will be. Try to make yourself look big and be loud, they should scamper off.
